Why do merchants look at them like they are a lot of money?
100s are the new 20s |
|
You touch cash?
I have people for that. You simply must acquire some help. That is, unless you’re one of the poors. |

When this ugly old car won't pull up a hill I'll write a suicide note on a hundred dollar bill. (Dire Straits-Heavy, Heavy fuel.)

Because if they don't have enough $20s in the till, you'll deplete them of $5s and $10s. That limits their ability to make change until their next bank run.
Simple logic, really. |
|
Lots of counterfeits, most places check every bill denom except $1bills
|
|
This thread is making me really feel old. I remember when ATMs gave $5 and $10 bills.
Now the one at my bank offers a $100 bill option. |

I went into Ace hardware the other day and they had a sign on the register counter, "not accepting bills made prior to 2013." WTF?
|

People are stupid. Local sheriff's office posted this to their Facebook page today. They been passed in our little town.

Send 'em to me postage due, if you're that unhappy with them.

They had a rash of movie prop money making the rounds, A drug store was even checking $1 bills because of how real they looked. It was noted in small print not real money.
|
|
Because hundreds are counterfeited a lot?
I've been to ATMs that gave out tens and twentys, but not in recent memory. |
|
The GF always gives me a dirty look when I leave a hundred on the bedside table after sex, I don’t know what her fricken problem is.

Bank One, Columbus, OH, in 1982 even had a $1 option. They were very early in the ATM game and probably just figuring things out, I don't think the $1 option lasted that long. |

Ask to use their pen and check the change that they give you back.

There's usually no tray for them in a till, for one.
Also a high rate of counterfeits. And, people are too stupid to use the very well-designed security features integrated into the bills, preferring to believe in magic pens and such. |

Quoted: Interesting $100 bill trivia. Here's a very old, 1934 series, $100 that was found in my FIL's safe deposit box after he passed. https://i.imgur.com/kfGBdeC.jpg And here's a not quite so old one. 1981 series. https://i.imgur.com/Omq5X5t.jpg If you'll notice the 1934 bill says you can redeem it for "lawful money" at the US Treasury or a Federal Reserve Bank. So basically it's a receipt for money. The 1981, says it IS money. View Quote My guess is 1971 had a bit to do with that. |

Ain't got no time for little heads, we only take the big heads around here.
|
|
Nobody thinks twice about a hundred around here unless the cashier just started their shift or just did a safe drop.
I have seen some folks pen-checking bills down to 5's and 10's recently though. |
|
I worked a truck stop back in the late 80s and when I cashed out the till I left $200 in there. $100 of it was change, mostly quarters as we had all vending machines. That doesn't leave much if the next customer has a $100 bill.
That said I had access to exchange the big bills for my nights cash. Anything over a $20 went under the drawer with the checks. LOL checks. |

Young man, i'm rapidly approaching 73 and getting forgetful, but as best I recall it was in the late 1970s or early 80s. |

There are lots that allow you to pick your bills. But, yeah, I don't think I ever saw an ATM until the early 1990s. |

In the summer of 1983 I had a two week temporary job for Exxon handing out literature and teaching people how to use their ATM card at the pump to buy gasoline while getting the cash price.
In the two weeks I worked exactly two customers actually tried it. |

I work on atms, some of the ones here got $5s, $10s and $20s.
Course some tribal casinos in the state got ATMs/ticket redemption kiosks $1s, $5s, $10s, $20s and $100s, and coins. |

Withdrew $200 from an ATM this morning and it gave me 5 20s and one $100 bill.
I think that’s the first time I’ve ever gotten a “big bill” from a machine. I suppose us pushing around wheelbarrels stacked with bundles of bills is coming soon. |
