I'm not an expert, but a few things I've learned.
Drink to your tastes, as you progress you will find your tastes change.
Let it rest a few minutes after a pour, it lets the "ethanol" scent/flavors burn off, and it's less harsh.
If you don't care for something, try a few drops of water, or a cube or two of ice, and let it sit for a minute, try it again.
Next time, cut back on the water/ice, try again.
Sip.
If you eat or drink anything else just before, it can change the entire profile.
If you like sweet, but not fake or complex, try Knob Creek Smoked Maple.
Most "flavored" Bourbons are watered down versions, KCSM is 90 proof with a hint of maple.
It's the only "flavored" spirit I like.
Wheated Bourbons tend to be sweeter.
Try any of the Weller line if you can find it.
Some like Bernheims, Larceny is another.
Willet Family reserve Rye is one of the sweetest Ryes I've had.
