How did it end up looking like this ?
You certainly don't want to hear rip it out and build it right. I'd most likely cut the 2 horizontals, put in a block between them.
Once this is done you can build an L-Shape profile for the step and if you want to go fancy you can put some flush mounted LEDs in there

I would match the lip of the landing to the lip of the stairs, You’ll probably have to add a little piece where you’ve already cut it off

*where the builder cut it

And chop the lip off the landing?

I think I'd extend it out flush with the wall extension.

Presuming the ancient Asian man I bought it from didn’t do this, the builder did

So put some 2x6 down and extend the landing towards the bottom of the photo?

Raise the landing up to height of last stair, which looks like a 3 inch step.

Plus do the carpentry already recommended.

I agree with this; build landing up to height of last stair.
then add one step coming off the side of the landing.
Stairs and landing should all have a nose; not flush.

That changes things...

I'd build the wall out to the end of the stringer as mentioned earlier.
Cut off those random 2x4's down below.
Then I'd probably cut the rest of the nose off the landing and reinstall a new one.

I'm going back thru the pics...
Maybe extending the landing towards the camera a bit would look good.
It will cause a step that needs to be wrapped on three sides, though.
Not a big deal, but if carpet, you'll want a nose/lip on all three sides.
