Halley's Comet specifically, or any comet?

Because Hale Bopp was a much better show in the recent past.  The most recent pass of Halley's wasn't particularly close to Earth.

Found a larger version.

I saw it in '86 as a kid.  Hopefully I'll still be here when it comes back around.  Like the guy in the cartoon, I doubt I'll make it to a third showing.

I think Hale Bopp is about the most beautiful thing I'll ever seen in the night sky.  I was working at Caterpillar in Dallas Oregon when it showed up and I used to just sit in the parking lot for 10-15 minutes before work staring up at that thing.

I had the best seat in the house for the 2017 eclipse. A very good friend of mine owns a cabin in the woods that borders the Shawnee National Forest in southern IL and we went and stayed the weekend. It was in the path of the total eclipse and happened to be place for the longest view of the eclipse at about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. What an amazing weekend.

I saw Halley's on the way in, in 1985, and on the way out in '86.   Viewed it many times.  My best view was naked eye before dawn, March 21 '86, I think--the head of the comet was a little east of the handle of the Teapot in Sagittarius.  The tail was 10 degrees long or so, extending to the west across the handle into the body of the Teapot.  It actually looked quite cool.  When the comet was at its closest the tail was pointing almost directly away from Earth, and it was far down in the southern sky at the time, barely above the horizon as seen from Colorado.  It was just an egg shaped blob at that time.

Same here- went to Marion with some friends. That weird diamond shimmer effect on the ground was wild. Wonder what causes that.

Yeah. I saw Haleys comet. Saw Hale Bopp. Traveled 5 hours to get into the path of totality in 2017 and that left a bigger impression than either comet.

The light gradually dimming, taking on an unusual tint that just seemed unnatural and added a somewhat dreamlike feel.  The temperature dropped noticeably. The ring in the sky when totality was achieved.

Yeah, worth the drive.
