Headed to DC for a long weekend to attend a high school reunion for my wife. We plan to do some touristy stuff on Friday and Saturday mornings and I need some places to eat lunch.

We are staying near friends in Falls Church, VA.

We ate at some decent places in DC when we went for vacation a couple summers ago. Most were not great, not terrible.

The exception was Old Ebbitt Grill - a solid meal in a cool place with lots of history.

Willard’s Barbecue in Chantilly.

Stay on the west side of the river if you are white.

If you must cross the river to say you did it, the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall are OK for white people.

Few restaurants in the area are truly exceptional, though many are pretty good. If you're in Falls Church, go to Trio or True Food. Those two I think stand out. But honestly, there are so many restaurants around the area that it's impossible to swing a dead cat without finding a decent local place. I mean there are literally hundreds of options within the Falls Church/Merrifield area alone.

The hardest thing for me to do is recommend restaurants in the area not just because I enjoy cooking but also because there are so many. I tend to prefer smaller local places, and even with that you have multiple options for every different style.

I will downvote Willard's though since they are a liquid smoke place. My neighbor is in the food service industry (sales executive) and once gave me the full rundown on who truly smokes their meat and who doesn't. I love barbecue and your best bet for truly good smoked meat in the area is going to be a pop-up roadside stand with a couple of old black dudes who smoke meat in an old garbage barrel and have been for 40 years. For an actual restaurant, Mookie's in Great Falls (not too far from Falls Church) is very good.

Very little to recommend within the city. Plenty of good restaurants, few great ones.

I had to teach the wife about this one. I hear about a BBQ place or someone recommends one to me, I drive around the building and see if there's a woodpile anywhere. If I don't see any wood, I don't even stop.

We just got back from DC. I have to give another vote for founding farmers. They make EVERYTHING from scratch, good value and usually you can get in pretty easy with or without a reservation. If we were to go back we would probably go there multiple times on the trip.

Other than that we also had really good food at Chang Chang (Szechuan style Chinese, definitely try the soup dumplings if you’re into that kind of thing), 2Fifty BBQ, and Yellow Cafe.

I second this! However we ordered 3 of the items for the five of us and had them serve it family style because the portions are so large.  Must Make Reservations!!!
Also in Georgetown Brasserie Liberté is excellent.

What kind of food do you like?

Viet
Thai
Korean
Japanese
Chinese
Indian
Pizza
German Beer Hall type stuff
Irish
Etc.

Just let me know!

I know a wonderful hole-in-the-wall place in Falls Church if you like crawfish.

But can recommend plenty of other places, especially around Falls Church/ Arlington. I've lived here around 20 years.

Viet
Thai
Korean
Japanese
Chinese
Indian

For Viet:

Your best bet is just going to Eden Center in Falls Church, it is one of the largest Vietnamese malls in the country, and there are restaurants for days. My Favorite is Hoang Viet, but I can't really name a bad one there.

If you just want to grab some fresh Banh Mi, I also really like Ba Le Bakery also in Falls Church, but outside of Eden Center.

Four Sisters Grill in Clarendon is also good.

Most of the Viet places are small mom-and-pop types (to me this is a good thing). If you want fancier Viet food, there is a new place named NUE in Falls Church (if you can't tell... Falls Church is where to go for Viet, lol!). I haven't been there yet myself, but I have a couple close friends (one Thai, one Viet) that both said it was good... if on the pricy side for Viet food.

For Thai:

Bangkok 54 in Arlington is great. Plus they have an attached grocery store, if you want to pick up some Thai snacks.

Thai Curry also in Arlington is good too.

Thai Square and Thai Treasure are also good choices. They are also in Arlington.

Also have to give a shout out to Neisha Thai in Tysons. My best friend has worked with them for years.

For Korean:

You'll find most of the Korean places in Annandale (about 5 miles south of Falls Church). And there are A LOT OF THEM. It's basically DC's Korea Town.

My main recommendations are Kogiya or Honey Pig for Korean BBQ. I STRONGLY recommend you try this if you haven't' before.

For Korean fried chicken, there is always Bonchon... but I think Choong Man (CM) Chicken is better. There are a half dozen around Northern VA.

For Japanese:

A couple good Japanese BBQ places are Gyu-San and Gyu-Kaku, both are in Arlington.

There are a couple new Izakayas in Arlington as well: Sakaki Izakaya in Clarendon (there is a nice dumpling shop next door to it as well). And Kanji Izakaya in Ballston.

Izakaya Seki is very good as well. It is located in DC proper, North East... and probably out of your way. But in general there are a lot of great restaurants in the area: Le Diplomate (French), Busboys and Poets (American), etc. It's also a great are for DC cocktail bars.

For sushi, Yume Sushi between Arlington and Falls Church is the best Sushi in Virginia. Sushi Rock in Arlington is fun if you want an Americanized sushi place.

If you want to spend some serious money, Sushi Nakazawa in DC, just north of a lot of the Smithsonian buildings is excellent... but hoo boy. It's expensive, and you'll definitely want to make reservations. Sushi Taro is also excellent/expensive.

For Chinese:

Unfortunately, most of the best Authentic Chinese food is up in Rockville Maryland.

That said: Hunan Gate in Ballston (Arlington) is a hidden gem... but make sure you get the Chinese Menu, not the American one. This is imperative.

Marks's Duck House and Peking Gourmet Inn, both in Falls Church, have been around forever, and are great.

Wing Sheng Bakery in Eden Center is a good Chinese Bakery.

Tiger Dumplings in Clarendon (Arlington) is a new dumpling place near the Izakaya I mentioned above. It is good.

Mala Tang (Arlington) or Hot Spot (Fairfax) for hotpot.

For Indian:

Raaga, south of Falls Church, and Urban Tandoor in Arlington are my favorite Indian places.

I hope this helps out a little!

Other just random things I'll mention: "The Wharf" in southern DC is a great place with a nice board walk and some restaurants, including ilili (yes, that is spelled correctly, lol) a fancy Lebanese place. Del Mar, a Spanish place is there as well.

Amoo's in McLean is a good hole-in-the-wall Persian place.

Ambar, with a DC location and an Arlington location is a very good Balkan place. Interesting traditional drinks as well.

Rus Uz in Ballston (Arlington), I highly recommend. It is Russian - Uzbekistan border region food. And it's excellent.

This is hardly a complete list... there is great food everywhere, don't listen to the haters. These are just some of my favorite places.

You probably won't get better recommendations than this. @beitodesstrafe seems to be a much more discerning eater than I am. I have to kinda remove myself from the picture when discussing food because some combination of being raised on poor Polish food and my overall activity level generally results in me eating almost anything (and lots of it) as though it might be the last food I'll ever see. I mean basically every meal to me is the normal person equivalent of the first hot meal you get after backpacking 30 miles on a two night camping trip when it's 40 outside.

There are a lot there I haven't tried but I was a big fan of a lot of stuff in Eden Center as well as Four Sisters. Lots of marinated well-seasoned beef. Honey Pig is an experience as much as it is a restaurant. The original in Annandale is what you want. For people watching and the best experience, go around midnight.

Busboys and Poets and Founding Farmers are both good downtown.

I know a wonderful hole-in-the-wall place in Falls Church if you like crawfish.

But can recommend plenty of other places, especially around Falls Church/ Arlington. I've lived here around 20 years.

Any of these would be great. Living in rural OH and my wife being from DC, she needs some cultural food on this trip.

It is good.

Honey Pig and Kogiya are good, but I’m more partial to Oegadjib.

Sunday in Saigon used to be fantastic for a more unusual style of Vietnamese, but I think their owner got sick and they went downhill.

Annangol is also good for Korean BBQ... you really can't go wrong with any BBQ place in Annandale!

As for Sunday in Saigon... yeah, I think they are just closed now. My best friend worked there for a while ~6 years ago or so

Early on they were amazing. By far my favorite place in the area.

Hey, while you’re here—have you ever found any good dim sum places?

Yeah, that’s what people always said, Rockville and Gaithersburg. Somehow that seemed like another planet though.

We were in DC a couple weeks ago and ate at some nice restaurants.

Pisco Y Nazca, a Peruvian (?) restaurant.  We shared the Plancha Pulpo (grilled octopus) and I had the braised lamb shank.  Both were excellent and I would recommend.
Cuba Libre; we shared the stuff yuca and the Cuban Roast Pork.  Both were excellent and I would recommend.
Old Ebbitt Grill; as others have stated, worth a visit
Taberna del Alabardero; a tapas place that was right around the corner from our hotel.  We enjoyed it.
Tatte Bakery; it's a chain that has good breakfast.
Founding Fathers; I'll be the lone dissenter and say it was just okay.  We had the biscuits which were just okay.  I had the blackened catfish with parmesan grits; it wasn't at all spicy and the grits were lukewarm.

It's a wealthy, international city so it's pretty easy to find excellent restaurants as long as you are willing to spend a few bucks.
