A couple years ago I asked for 10mm sockets for Christmas. Dad, being sensible, bought me a bunch of them.
I've lost several of them, but still have a few stashed back. |

Yep. Both sockets and wrenches. 9/16 close behind, so I keep some cheap extras around, just in case.

The only sockets and wrenches I've ever "lost" were 10mm.
Of course it was because I lent tools to a fucking asshole and got them back without a single 10mm anything in the kit, but yea. |

10mm? Nope...and I even owned a couple '84-'85 Toyota Pickups I wrenched on!
But, all of my 3/4" sockets have walked off. I think I have one 1/2" drive 12pt left in the drawer... |

Probably a few times. Once due to the theft of my entire bottom roller cabinet, along with two decades of handmade tools (mostly modified/welded/ground header and spark plug wrenches to get around the headers).

If you work on cars for a living it's one of the most commonly used sockets. You're also trying to get as much work done as possible so try to work quickly. Those little fuckers fall into every little hole and crevice in overly crowded engine compartments and once they're gone.....they're gone. You're not going to pull an engine to find a socket and can't get your hands into all those little spaces so end up letting them go. Long flexible handled magnets saved me a few times, but I lost quite a few.
I left the business back in '98 so only work on my cars now. I still don't have any 10mm sockets. I worked on the "Automile" which was about 5 miles of highway lined with dealerships. I'd find tools on the road when I was out on test drives quite often, including a $90 dead blow hammer, a dozen or so ratchets, and a variety of random tools like pick and screwdrivers. |

I'm on probably my 8th or so 3/8" drive 10mm shallow socket. I've gone through around 5 or so 1/4" drive 10mm sockets as well. At the moment, I don't even have a 3/8" drive 10mm deep since I haven't gotten around to replacing the last one that walked off yet. I once lost (well, lost probably isn't the right word, I know exactly where I left them) three different 10mm wrenches on the same car
Oh well, losing/breaking/wearing out tools comes with the territory when you're a mechanic. Edit: I've also lost quite a few tools when people would borrow them (frequently without permission) and never return them. Salesmen are especially guilty of this because they typically don't bring the tools back, so when you stop letting them borrow your shit, they just stop asking you before taking your shit. |

10 mm is very common on the Jeep Wrangler for holding assorted small stuff to the vehicle.
I managed to lose my 10 mm from my "good" set of sockets working on the front dash speakers. That socket, once it broke free, didn't look back and buried itself deep deep down inside my dash. I looked and poked, I shook and pushed the wiring harness and vent duct work ... no 10 mm. Two years later we're on a bumpy trail and the car spit the thing out down by my wife's feet ... she was what's this and held up the socket. Holy mother of my socket set is 100% again. I was in Harbor Freight yesterday and tried to find individual 10 mm sockets. No go. I was going to buy a box of them and give them out as jokes to my fellow gear heads. i worked for hyundai for 10+ years and kia for a few...... over half of your bolts on the entire car are 10mm......... ive lost/broke a shit ton of 10mm sockets. started buying locking extensions

10mm is relatively recent for me, surprisingly. Haven't lost any yet, but I have bought multiple 10mm wrenches to have around.
Now, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, and 9/16" sockets and wrenches, lemme tell ya....Flea markets were my friend. I have a small pile of these behind my "good" (or current use) wrenches. |

Nope, but every so often my 5/8' wrenches get a hankering for traveling. When ever I open the rollaway drawer, if one wrench isn't in the it's holder it's the 5/8".

I've not lost one and I hardly ever lose sockets or wrenches as I'm pretty anal about putting them back where I got them.
Now Screwdrivers and the various bits, I can be holding one or put it in a magnetic tray and lose it. I'll also admit, I'm not mechanic and not very mechanically inclined. Maybe the more inclined you are the more the probability of losing a 10mm increases. |

I've actually lost more 10mm combination wrenches than sockets. And I have lost at least a half dozen 10mm sockets over the years.
I don't know if they "get borrowed" or if "10mm" etched on a wrench or socket is something that causes mini black holes to form and consume the wrench/socket, but those things are always gone when I look for one. |

I had heard stories passed from one mechanic to the next of these mythical beings. The fabled 10 mm socket... I have seen single ones before... Only briefly. One minute it's on my ratchet, the next simply gone.. never to be seen again. I would then half destroy the fastener with a channel locks or a vice grips in a vain attempt to remove it. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would find an entire family of the creatures. I've been fooled before so I half expected an empty box to arrive. Much to my surprise two to three days later they were here. I spent the first week with them still in the packaging, afraid that with their first hint of freedom they would flee like all the rest... I very cautiously eased them into their new surroundings. A battery change here, a bad ac compressor there... They are slowly acclimating to their new home. Right now I keep them in sight at all times. I have not as of yet let them sleep in the tool box with the others. Maybe eventually. I am cautiously optimistic that they have accepted me as one of their own. Maybe, just maybe they feel like they have truly found a home... Only time will tell |

You can find almost every thing you need for replacement tools at flea markets.
I found thid tool on the ground at my hunting club. Craftsman 4mm. # 29253. I don't know what it is. Even after googleing I still don't know. |

I have been using the same hand-me-down socket set from a family member for more than 20 years now. Have all of them.
Also have a spare bag of sockets, I guess they travel through another dimension and end up in my garage. Occasionally I donate a bunch of the extras or put them together into complete kits to give to people. |

2 decades as an automechanic. I've lost toolboxes of tools. 10mm sockets were well represented there.
But ya gotta remember, 10mm fasteners are very common and so it is used a lot. A lot more exposure to potential loss. 11mm could be replaced with 7/16, 12mm wasn't common at all. 13mm was common and I lost those too. 14mm not common, 15mm reasonably common. If had to pick the Houdini handtool I would probably pick various allen wrenches. |
