So a friend of mine, a former coworker, was a Fire Captain with the City of Greensboro and had been there 16 years.  He posted the meme below and the City terminated his employment last week.

I worked at the same Dept for 20 years and was also a Fire Captain, and they initiated a dismissal process on me in 2020 for posting a meme critical of BLM.  This City has gone completely "woke" and essentially all conservative opinions are classified as discriminatory.

But here's a post from the City's official Twitter account

What's the problem, I thought people could be proud of their sexual orientation?

RIP: not GD, hope he gets this sorted out.

Not in uniform, not speaking for his agency, he might have something to appeal.  What do the sop-s say?  An attorney that specializes in this area would be the first person I contacted.

I must have scars on my tongue from biting it so often while in uniform.   The admin and politicians will sacrifice you to the leftist deities.  NY is run by leftist wack jobs.

One of the many reasons I grabbed my retirement not long after I was eligible.

First Amendment retaliation.
Not to mention blatant discrimination against his sexual orientation.

I'd be tempted to sue the (insert GD appropriate language here) even if they do hire him back upon appeal. I wouldn't sue the city, I'd sue the (***) who did it.

And this is why I’m glad I’m in a state with good union protections.

Our city tried to put in a policy that said more or less that you could be fired for saying anything they disagree with online on or off duty. The union told them to fuck off and the policy was quickly clarified as to “while representing oneself” as a city employee.

They cannot regulate free speech on a private platform/page. If it was being done as captain x, with xyz agency, or profile identified as such then maybe.

However, an employee can say whatever they want off duty, someone is about to be paid.

Everyone on this site thinks every time they feel “wronged” it’s going to be a civil lawsuit payday.  Maybe instead of bending over backwards to avoid jury duty (like the dozens of threads every year) you all should go and see how the legal system actually works.

NC a right to work state?

So they fired him for his sexual preference?? That sounds like a payday…
Right to work does NOT apply to protected status . You can’t say “your fired because your black, old, female, sexually not what I like, ect”

You can say “your gone cuz you are a Dallas cowboys fan, because you like chevys, you are a jerk”

why would anyone in any official capacity even have social media in 2023, you could likely get fired over most anything you post as there is always someone offended. i hope he sues them and wins but this is why social media sucks.

Yes, but local & state government workers are exempt from some of the RTW laws, meaning it's harder to fire a government worker than a private sector worker, but I don't know all the details on it.

Not neccesarily. File a section 1983 Monell claim in Federal Court. They're displaying a pattern of violating your civil rights as a matter of institutional doctrine. Your claim is extended by the fact that their conduct is ongoing and couldn't be established  by your single incident.

I didn't dare get into Facebook until I retired earlier this year and I needed to create  a personal profile so I could post to my hiking groups page
We had a fairly strict social media policy that I ran afoul of nearly twenty years ago just by posting on this and other gun forums.

What's the point of the union if they don't protect members from this garbage?

I guess it's like how they did fuck all while NYC was firing responders for refusing the experimental injection.

Googling around about the outcome of this thread he, uh, doesn't appear to have had a successful appeal and is likely not currently relaxing on his yacht he bought with the proceeds of his lawsuit against the city of Greensboro.

Yeah it is amazing how much .gov gets to stifle your first amendment protections at times.  Pretty ridiculous.

I miss the days when you actually had to do something wrong to get in trouble…

Gee, wonder why everyone retires as soon as possible, and they cannot hire enough people these days?

Why yes, since you said " everyone", you're on this site, and you don't feel that way. See how that works?

I can't speak for everyone but most people know that even good law suits are crap shoots. Thanks for being the articulate voice of rational thought on the topic, though.
