Could use some guidance. My HP laptop will do a thermal shutdown after watching video even at 720 after about 15 minutes, after about 5 minutes, the internal fan starts ramping up, until it's really running hard, then shuts down. I power back on to a blue screen stating CPU temp is 90 degrees, I can let it cool down for a few minutes, but then resuming video it will shut down again even sooner because it's already closer to shut down temp. I have new RAM sitting in my mailbox at home (maxing out to 8G) but I'm out travelling for another month or so, but I don't know if it would help, I grabbed it for $20, so it was a no brainer for the money. My other cheap laptop at home never had an issue. This a a hardware/software refresh of a barely used older laptop I was given. Specs are:

Yep every HP laptop I've ever had anything to do with did that right before it died. Been there done that learned my lesson. One did it in warranty. It died again right outside of warranty.

Dust free, light use before I got it, and did a quick cleanout of what was barely there when I upgraded it to SSD and reloaded windows from a download without the HP bloatware. Runs fine otherwise for my uses, 12 second boot, just chokes on video.

You'll probably need to open up the laptop, and quite possibly remove the heatsink assembly and replace the thermal paste.  While it is open you'll also have a better view of any internal dust.

This video shows disassembly and replacement of thermal paste.

Thanks all, I will clean and redo the thermal paste, and see what happens, once I get back home from road tripping.
