I'm not a fan of tater tots, they always seem to have a freezer burn taste to me. But throw those hashbrown patties and i'd be all over it.

Around here, it's only a "hotdish" if it goes to a potluck. If it stays home, it's a casserole. Nice job, OP. Pure Michigan |

It's called hot dish and it's made like this:
Browned ground beef and onions on the bottom. Green beans on top of that. Cream of mushroom soup on top of that. Tater tots as the top layer. |

Add the oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the onions with the garlic for 5 minutes, stirring often until softened. Add the beef to the skillet, breaking up with a spoon and cooking until no pink remains, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any grease from the skillet then add the salt, pepper, worcestershire sauce and tomato paste and stir to combine. Pour in the gravy and stir into the beef mixture. Bring the beef to a simmer then add the frozen peas and carrots. Stir to combine with the filling and to defrost slightly. Pour the filling into a 9? x 13? casserole dish that’s been sprayed with cooking spray. Add the frozen tater tots on top of the beef filling, arranging in a single layer. Bake for 35 minutes until the tater tots are golden brown and the filling is bubbling. View Quote Username checks out. |

Quoted: I'd just use 97/3 extra lean ground beef and skip adding extra salt. That shit by default is going to be salty enough. View Quote Swapping the tater tots for frozen shredded hash browns will cut some salt. I could DIY my own beef gravy from home-made salt free stock and a simple roux. DH has hypertension so I have learned to make low/no salt versions of these dishes. |

Would eat
I'd make my own gravy vs. the jarred stuff, but the jarred stuff isn't bad Nice shortcut instead of making mashed potatoes+beef mix+assembling and baking |
|
We do ours with bacon, onions, velveeta, cream of mushroom, ground beef, tater tots, and top with shredded cheddar.

I wonder how it would be if you replaced the Tater Tots with a copycat recipe of Cracker Barrel Hash Brown Casserole?

I'm seriously craving some old high school comfort food right now. Tater Tot Hotdish day was a sacred day. That and sheet pan pizza, buttered rotini, chicken nuggets...
Damn, I'm getting the nostalgia bug. I might have to make some noodles with ketchup, just for the hell of it. |
