Where he says his name. He turns the emperor into the Joker.

When he sticks the guy in the chest with 2 swords, does a brief victory lap, then pulls them out and cuts his head off them like they’re scissors.

I recently learned about the actor that played the retired champion. Interesting guy. Played one of James Earl Jones' sidekicks in Conan. 6-5 black belt.

That has to be the best scene in Gladiator.

So Timmy, do you like gladiator movies?

The story is an interesting melting of the true stories of Rome.

Commodus is... Commodus.  The actual emperor and son of Marcus Aurelius who fought in the arena, supposedly dulling the swords of opponents to guarantee victory.  Commodus was supposedly assassinated by a freed gladiator.

The Spaniard is practically Germanicus at the beginning of the movie.  Emperor Tiberius may or may not have had Germanicus killed, as Germanicus had the favor of the military and the people, neither of which Tiberius had.  Then the Spaniard becomes a fighter for the power of the Senate in sort of a short lived Spartacus rebellion.

Interesting shit.

Saw it on the huge screen with terrific sound at the legendary Ziegfeld theater on 54th St in NYC when it came out--since closed . .

Those fight scenes were spectacular---there really are some movies where it's better to see on the big screen.   This was one of them.

I love that movie.

My favorite scene is when Maxiumus's fellow prisoner, the big guy who he probably fought against in Germania,  tastes his food for him to be sure it isn't poisoned (and then pretends that it is and they all laugh).

That one small scene there illustrates the bond Maximum created with his men and the type of man he had to be in order to do that.

It is an excellent movie, I have maybe a dozen movies I bought. I am not a buy movies person.

Gladiator is one of them.

Probably the ending, walking through the wheat... then dude is burying his little figurines... "I will see you again... But not yet.. not yet."

Gives me chills even typing it out. One of the BEST 30 seconds ever recorded.

I tried watching it again not too long ago, and it somehow felt dated to me.

Felt very 90s, even though it was a period piece.

And just think, what they showed was only about 1/10 the size a real Roman legion

I like the initial battle, too. "Quello che facciamo in vita riecheggia nell'eternità". I Think it sounds better in italian, of course it would sound even better in arcaic latin.

Less than 1/10. And often many legions fough t togheter. I remember some stunning numbers referred to some battles. Sometimes something like 100 romans killed and 180000 Barbarians killed.

Hmm...dude from Italy likes "Gladiator"; who woulda thunk?  LOL

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius.... (That whole speech).  I'll have my revenge in this life or the next...

Best part in the whole movie.

Of course i love roman history. I love the idea that 2000 years ago there was the concept of "order": you, as a roman citizen, were part of that incredible system that took the light in a dark and uncivilized world. No preoccupations about being just a monkey living on a small rock in the universe, things were simple. At the end all of us being part of western civilization derive from the roman civilization in some ways.

The "He was soldier of Rome. Honor him" scene. The way she said it, she wasn't asking and some of the most powerful men in the country fell in line. Marcus was right, she would have been one hell of a Ceasar.

That and the scene where he reveals himself to the emperor.

Lots of great scenes in that film.

The opening battle scene was awesome is on the big screen.  One of the best battle scenes ever.

My favorite scene has to be when he gives his name, though.  That was so powerful.  When he went on to say he was the father of a murdered son, and the husband of a murdered wife, I really wanted him to slaughter the Emperor right then and there.
