I have a fairly good stash of stuff I bought during Trump presidency.  I am not buying more but also am not shooting much.  Just sitting on it.  Ammo panics stress me out and I am done with it.

What I can’t believe is how many ARs I have in my safe.  Crazy. 😜

I think most Arfcom folks buy ammo/components routinely to keep their ammo fort up to date.

But I submit there is a whole different class of gun owner out there that outnumbers arfcom 500:1.

This gun owner only buys ammo when he needs it or when he feels panic.
Goin' Huntin': Buy 20 rounds
Shootin' some birds: buy 2 boxes of 25 rounds.
Need ammo for new AR for home defense: Buy 40 rounds to load a 30 round mag.

But when panic sets in, like the Summer of Love, a school shooting, impending legislation then it's:
BUY ALL THE AMMO, CLEAN OUT THE STORES!!!!
NECKBEARD ALL THE 22, I MUST HAVE IT ALL....!!!!

And when this really kicks off then stocks hold out for usually about 48-72hrs in stores and online then EVERYTHING is cleaned out.

Face it we all have family members/acquaintances/co-workers like this.

When this happens again (and it will) it could get interesting if ammo companies can't re-supply their powders like they always have.

That's it.  I would not be surprised if some powder and ammo prices double.  And it might happen quickly.  I decided not to be caught short.  Could be wrong, but no harm in having more.

I don't know what to make of all the nitrocellulose shortage talk, but ammo prices have been sitting at what seems to be the post-Joeflation lows for a while now, there are decent sales going on, shortages/price increases on reloading powders seem to be real, and we are in an election year.

Buying ammo in these Memorial Day sales seems to be a pretty safe and good idea. Whether or not you do so with your arms flailing wildly in panic is up to you.

I've noticed a lot of posts in this thread are missing the point:  The prediction is that a shortage could happen any minute now, probably by the end of summer for sure.  Last time I visited Sportsman's Warehouse, for example, they had more ammo than what would fill three or four shopping carts.

End of July?  Who knows.  Tom Gresham is just saying there's a tsunami of shortage coming if you believe the people he's been talking to; ergo, we might be in the salad days today--in a few weeks not so much.

Why the hell would any police agency trade in basic .223 practice ammo?  Just makes no sense- fucking train you fools!  That is the opposite of stockpiling, which is something any agency should do for when the supply dries up (again).  Just dumb.

I don't think he's wrong, but I also think there's a glut of ammunition right now because most people don't have the spare cash to stack it deep.

I failed to stack it deep in 2019, not making that mistake again. I'm going to keep buying a case or two every month for the foreseeable future. Shooting is one of my primary hobbies and I enjoy it too much not to be able to do it when there's a shortage.

Just a thought.... Nobody seems at all interested in blocking the sale of Vista Outdoors' ammo divisions to a European company who is currently selling as much ammo as they can produce to Ukraine. With European countries increasing their buying and more aid to Ukraine, we could see production diversions to government sales added in with the Chicoms' not selling nitrocellulose to the US. In a few months, we could see shortages in common calibers and substantial increases in prices. Not saying it WILL happen, just that it COULD. No need to panic, but definitely a time to keep a weather eye out.
Link Posted: 5/26/2024 11:48:18 PM EDT
[Last Edit: DocApocalypse] [#25]
Ukraine seems to be sucking up the ammo faster than they can make it. A caller to his show claimed to be involved in shipping the ammo to Ukraine and  asserted that. It's the nitrocellulose that's at issue. Whether you reload or not, you'll be affected.  It's not like they can replenish the supply fast enough to keep prices down.

I put away another 1400 rounds of 5.56 this weekend. I can no longer justify shooting the "irons only" gun because I need to stay in practice with the HD gun.

I wish I could have put back 14,000 rounds.

With other wars looming, things may even get worse. I'm concentrating on 22 lr conversion kit shooting in an AR now.

Once again, what you see in stock now may give you the illusion all is well, but Gresham keeps sticking to his story that industry people are warning him that huge price increases are coming.

Fuckin' horseshit every bit of it, people trying to get you to buy at vastly over-inflated prices. This is no different than stockmarket pumpers.

Go ahead, buy that shit. If they're to the point they're really grinding on you to buy NOW that means price is very close to cratering.

Won't be long now. Those of us who are old enough to have seen these cycles are patiently waiting, and we have a ton of extra cash from selling into the panic that we'll be spending on cheap ammo in the time to come. Just like we did the last time, and the time before that, and before that etc.etc.

Wake up, and learn people.

Sweet Jesus, are you that lame?  Check Ammoseek.   Actual FEDERAL XM193 is not easy to come by since Winchester took over.  2 sellers at rape me prices...

https://ammoseek.com/ammo/5.56x45mm-nato/Federal-rifle-55grains?pl=no&ikw=xm193

Now if you are willing to go with WINCHESTER Lake City production on the other hand...

Here

So M193-type ammo isn't exactly cheap per se, but adjusted for inflation, not too terrible.

What with the likelihood of decreased availability due to powder production issues, the possibility of a Summer of Love courtesy of the Leftists, and increased demand (even though people generally speaking have less disposable income, many will pay panic prices if need be because they are too silly to buy when ammo is still available at current pricing), one ought to lay in stock if you haven't already.

Its not panic time yet, but its looming, so get ahead of the herd and get what you need sooner rather than later.

I was surprised at how much pistol ammo I will need to simply maintain basic proficiency at a mere 50-rds a week (actually 60 since I shoot 4 15-rd mags per range session).  10 months x 4 weeks/month = 40 sessions.  40 sessions x 60 rds = 2400 rds, or 2.4 cases of ammo.  Call it 2.5 cases/YEAR.  Now if I want to shoot more to increase my skill faster, double that easily.  Rifle, I shoot that less, but still, 100 rds a month is a slow month, so say a case/year.  It adds up fast.

Its not hoarding ammo for SHTF - realistically I don't expect to use up half a case per rifle/family member defending ourselves.  Its the number of rounds to obtain and maintain basic proficiency that adds up fast.

I'm not sure about that.

Remember that your money has lost 20-30% of its buying power since 2019.

Certain things like Russian caliber ammo is definitely higher, but I don't think most of the field is.

Am I?

Are you that convinced that Gresham is being completely agnostic in his analysis and that he has no dog in this hunt? Like stocks, options, honorariums etc.?

Been trading stocks for over 30 years, and have listened to every kind of propaganda imaginable.

When they yell BUY BUY BUY! It means they already bought cheaper and are getting ready to sell (to you). When they yell DOOM SELLSELLSELL! It means they shorted the shit out of it, and when it gets to the bottom and they cover for a huge profit, they re-buy and start yelling BUY BUY BUY again.

Everybody has an agenda, especially if they have a show, a podcast, a youtube channel, whatever. It's just noise.

You have to break that consumer cycle, buy when it's cheap, buy way more than you need, then sit out the high side of the cycle. Sure it may go higher, may go way higher, after Sandy Hook I saw plenty of .223 go for 1000 bucks a case. So I waited until it was back to 300 a few years later and then bought. And PLENTY talking heads were screaming back then that NOTHING would ever be any cheaper ever again.

2013 - $3500.00 AR's.

2016 -$350.00 AR's

We shouldn't help people who are making money off high prices continue to do so by helping spread their propaganda and fear porn.

The conditions for ammo shortages and large price increases are here: inflation, wars, anit-gunners, corporate consolidation, and nitro cellulose and cotton linter shortages, along with other ammo inputs being diverted military production.

I am of the opinion that it just hasn't hit yet because:
1- Inflation is killing people
2- There is currently a large inventory of ammo now.

All it's gonna take is one small spark of something and the shortage will be in full swing.  I am of the opinion that all the current ammo stocks will be exhausted within a 72 hour period of time once something sparks panic.

What will cause it doesn't matter, the conditions are here.

100%

In Jan 2020, I told friends of mine, something screwy is coming down the line, BTW, here are links to sales for 9mm HST for $350/1000, and M193 5.56 for $0.26/pr.

They said, “Nah, I’m good”.

Then the lockdowns were announced and I get half a dozen texts, “Hey, a few of us are going to the LGS’s in the area to stock up. Wanna join us?”. “Nah, I’m good. None of y’all took advantage of the sales links I sent you, did you? Have fun”.

They sent me photos of lines around the block. “Yeah, they restricted everyone to just one box of 9mm and one box of 5.56”.

I still have cans of what I lovingly dub “The Hilary-Midway IMI M193 stash”
