Yeah. Fuchs Titan GT1 Flex 3 5w40.

And yes.. I mean, I sell oil.

Interesting.  I thought they would run out of 0W-16 first.

An article posted 2-3 months and many pages ago detailed why 0w20 in particular, will be the hardest hit by the drop in Grp3 production/availability.

The majors talk a lot about integrity and corporate citizenship, but the reality is diesel margins have been fat while the domestic consumer eats a $6/gallon average for the first time ever. I'm a free-market guy, but I'm also been in the industry long enough to know you don't shit where you eat. Anyone can see the export math while a CEO is warning about a "fuel crisis" is a bad look, even if every dollar of it is legal and rational.

On the DPA, there's an active provision (Title I) that specifically covers mandatory allocation and pricing of fuel and feedstock. It's not the WW2-era broad price control title, that one's expired. But it's real, and it's fuel-specific. Doesn't matter if it'd survive a court challenge. This administration has shown it'll threaten the maximalist read of its own authority just to force a reaction, real intent or not, and I don't think Wirth wants to be the guy who calls that bluff in public in an election year. He's been around too long, and is too political, to make that mistake twice.

My honest read: the industry is playing chicken with an administration that's shown it'll go loud, not just in the press but with whatever tools it can point to. My bet is this gets political before November regardless of who's actually right on the merits. If the House flips, the next round looks a lot like the last four years under Biden, just with different names attached, and the majors end up back where they started post-COVID, maybe worse off.

It's a shame the industry keeps taking the black eye for the short-term win instead of playing the long game. I'm not trying to grind an axe here, this is genuinely disappointing to watch from inside the business.

TL;DR:

Chevron CEO Mike Wirth says the fuel crisis oil executives warned would follow a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz has now officially arrived, with the mechanisms that mitigated price and supply risk having "largely now played out" and the system holding nowhere near the buffers it had when the war began, as Trump officials continue to claim the disruption is temporary, per WSJ.

Wirth says he has not spoken to Trump since August 3, when Trump attacked him on Truth Social for not crediting the administration and demanded oil companies bring retail prices "DOWN, NOW!"

I said in March, I didn’t want to be right. This would be much easier for me to just eat crow and look like an idiot on the Internet.

This.

They are making record profits while crying about limited supply....while they offshore production and create limited supplies via shifting production towards specific sectors and markets.

This is market manipulation on a grand scale.  Yes, there are issues with supply...but they are functionally manipulating that to drive prices higher and profit via the suffering of their own nation.

Trump was a HUUUUGE friend to the oil and gas industry.  The left literally wanted them in prison.  To stab the American people...and Trump, in the back for profit is to literally be the evil big oil corp that the left claimed them to be.  It will result in all of America hating them and the left destroying them once they are back in power.

This is short sighted profit over long term survival.

16 drums for the entire COUNTRY as in the USofA? Well, that isn't going to go far.............

Assuming a conservative 5 quarts per oil change, thats enough for just 704 vehicles.

It’s a good investment on Foxtrot08’s part, because when availability disappears, Porsche owners will pay a 400% price hike.

Yes.

The main difference in the number before the ‘W’, is how cold the ambient temps might get where the vehicle will be started.

5W## was the Winter recommendation for decades (over 10W##, even here in MI, where it’s not uncommon to see -ve temps in winter) before the advent of 0W## oils (which of course, brought about all sorts of autistic screeching about oils “like water” that would blow up engines, when 0w## first started rolling out).

I agree with the folks stating that the rationing limits AREN’T directed at the average DIY’er.

Even if someone had 6 vehicles, those limits aren’t going to prevent them doing their own oil changes.

The measure is aimed primarily at avoiding shops coming in and buying out the store’s stock because they can’t get what they need from their suppliers (and to a smaller measure, neckbeards ).

The Costco limits make a lot more sense when dealerships now are allowed to use non OeM brand oil and get paid for it.

Not that it’s anything top secret. Toyota dealers have it from PANT.  It just has pricing all over it and I don’t post pricing. I also don’t feel like editing it all right now.

Went along with my brother to the Farmers Coop today. He wanted to pre-buy fertilizer for the spring, which he does every year and to pre-buy some diesel.  He wasn’t allowed to pre-buy the fertilizer, was only able to lock in some of the tonnage.  They said volatility and availability uncertainty is simply too high right now.  He was able to buy the diesel he needed for the remainder of harvest.

Legit question, sorry if it was covered and I missed it. How long does this shit last on the shelf before it degrades in a non climate controlled environment? Full synthetic vs blend. 30W vs whatever. Generally just curious, cause I’ve heard massive ranges over the years. Surely it degrades some over time.

I restocked a little today with a couple jugs of each.  $27/jug for Valvoline advanced synthetic 5w-20 for the car, and $28/jug for Penzoil 5w-30 for the truck.
Tractor Supply of all places....cheaper than Walmart.  Mobil1 was the same price as Walmart at $32/jug.  I passed on it this time.

I believe Fox said between 5-10 years.

You missed the non-climate controlled part of his post.

5 years is a safe margin in climate controlled conditions.

Non-climate controlled? Really depends on the conditions. The more extreme, and the greater the temp swings, the shorter the shelf life.

I don’t see why not, if the bottles are sealed.

The question is, do you trust them to USE your oil, and not keep it for themselves while filling your car with whatever bulk they acquired?

When I used to take my vehicles in to a quick change place, it was one of those in-car, drive over the trough places, where I could watch them pouring my oil into my car.

I’m sure a dealership would be fine, but I’ve heard too much crap, and would be paranoid about the possibility of someone working there who believes that the OEM oil they can no longer get, is a better product than the emergency replacement product for their personal vehicle that uses the same oil.

That's a valid point.  I guess if I'm trusting them to do major services that I need to trust them to use the oil I bring in.

I hopped on chat and they said it's not a problem to use my oil.

No kidding. What is that, 20 cases of POF-4612 oil filters? Planning to put more than a million miles on that car?

Yes, it's in writing. From Toyota.

They're authorizing dealers to use non Toyota program oils. As long as they meet or exceed GTMO 0w20 specs.

How is Toyota on 0w08 supply?  Need an oil change for my Camry, that will be covered by them, very soon.  I have 25q of M1 0w08 in the garage but would rather let them deal with it since I've already paid for it.

I would call and ask if they actually have TGMO 0w8 in stock before you go there.

If they don't, do it yourself in less time than it takes to drive to the dealer and back, and ask for a refund from Toyota, equal to what Instant Oil Change is charging for 0w8 this week.

Well shoot.  I placed an order with my usual Toyota parts dealer yesterday which included 12 quarts of GTMO 0W20.  The oil part of the order did not get filled.  I emailed them asking about it but with the latest news I'm sure they will tell me it's not available.  I already have some for the near future, was just trying to stock up a bit.

For the 20k mile oil change, there’s the consideration of service records for warranty purposes.

Manufacturers will use any potential excuse for warranty denials. From experience (wasn’t a warranty issue), it becomes your word vs a technician’s that an issue/damage wasn’t their fault, and you’re praying the judge believes you over the ‘licensed and trained technician’.
