I actually just bought my Dad a '39 Chevy Master Deluxe that raced Big Daddy back in the day. Of course Big Daddy won, but I couldn't pass up that car because of it's history. Plus it made the old man smile like kid.
I hear Big Daddy is still racing too. |

I remember Garlits and the Snake. That’s all I got.
Not a fan, but everyone knew those names. |

I have some great memories of watching Garlits dominate top fuel, the 'Snake vs. Mongoose' funny car rivalry, Muldowny breaking the gender barrier, rocket go-karts, jet cars at night, and other NHRA goodness at Union Grove, Wisconsin "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!" events.

He was always 1 of the guys I rooted for and he hung out with us for an hour or so before he had to go do some TV. Absolutely first class gentleman and an all around regular guy. |

I grew up reading about these old timer drag racers by digging through the stack of Hot Rod mags my dad had in the closet.(along with some Playboys). Garlitz was my favorite, just from that. Then I read a biography of Big Daddy at the local library that was so old he hadn't switched to rear engined yet. Imagine, he was already that big of a legend. It was all about him going out west and beating the snake and other early legends.
Next I got to see him race in person about 1982. He beat Muldowney in the finals, think it was AHRA or IHRA. About 10 years ago I saw him at SEMA. Hell he almost ran over me. He was driving a mobility scooter. |
|
|
[#25]
I saw Garlits and Muldowney do a best of 3 match race on a Saturday night at Spartanburg International Dragway around '79 or '80. They were racing a national event at Darlington SC and towed to Spartanburg for the match race. Great times for sure, primitive by today's standard but those cars were the absolute state of the art at the time.

He's rumored to be working on a record setting EV dragster to smoke the nitro rigs. No batteries, all big capacitors. I would imagine the sequencing would be quite the trick.
His museum is incredible. A must see for gearheads. He wanders in and out most days. He is quite approachable. $13.50 admittance for seniors when I was there last year. Edit. Good Cuban take out around the corner for lunch. https://www.tomscubanonthego.com/cubansandwich |

Don truly is one of a few extraordinary Gentlemen I've ever had the pleasure to meet in my life. This recent Vid shows his passion at around 1:10 when he describes the reaction to his NAVY sponsors to his God is Love cross he had painted on his car. This is a great vid if you can find the time to take it in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CVwu7X8uFM

I'm an old school drag fan went a to Lakeland International Raceway outside Memphis TN when a kid late 1970's . Remember the Green Mamba Jet car don't remember any funny cars . Neighbor across the street raced his black 69 Z/28 302 4/sp . Neighbor behind us had a 69 Camaro big block 4 sp Modified Production ran 11's . Gold black stripes jacked up with fat slicks chrome reveres rims with skinny front tires with Cragar S/S rims. Mom would get get a little mad when stated it up and rattled the kitchen widows and dishes . There is Lakeland Int. Raceway on Facebook .
