Why hasn't flares or other devices been invented to seal gun shot wounds or stab wounds where a tourniquet can't reach ?
Sticking a flare in a gushing blood flow knife stab wound sounds like it would work to seal the artery no? |

A flare and a gallon of gas is a medical kit ? I am going to just bleed out thanks.

Why spend money on a flare when you could shove a charcoal briquette in the wound. Charcoal will clean the wound too.

Know how people jump out a window 100 stories up to escape fire? Very few people would be willing to do that and in combination with with flammable clothing, that is a hard no from me comrade. People don't think fire be like it is, but it do. (Did I do that right?). TT

You go first, OP
I'll stick to applying tourniquets. I'll gladly accept a tourniquet before a road flare. I guess this is why EMTs, paramedics, nurses, and physicians go to school. |

You know you can shove gauze into a trauma wound, right? Cautery should only be used if there’s no possible alternative available to stop the bleeding. If you have room for a road flare, you can probably find some room for a pack of gauze and a trauma bandage.

This sort of shit is what makes me worry when I see dudes with decompression needles and those fuckin tubes you stick down dudes throats in their kit

John Rambo poured gunpowder in his wound and lit it on fire. Painful, but effective.

Im guessing you have never seen any trauma wounds. Its ok. The biggest reason is, that wouldnt work out well for the patient.

For a wound in an area that a tourniquet can't be applied, putting it on the neck will stop the bleeding.
I would prefer this to having a lit road flare (I assume OP means it is lit) shoved in my wound. |

Give it a try and report back to the class on how it went for you

Stick it in your Walmart shopping bag with the box of tampons and use a marker to write "IFAK" on it.

A road flare is about 3x hotter than the classic red hot knife cauterization, its also spewing all kinds of shit.

17th century: You have bad breath, here are some leeches.
19th century: You have the consumption, you should do cocaine about it. 21st century: You have a sucking chest wound, stick fire in it. |

Quoted: To cauterize it? Cauterizing bleeds is typically something done on a delicate level in an operating room via a cautery. Sticking a lit flare into a wound is an extremely bad idea. You're going to cause MASSIVE tissue damage from burns and it's unlikely it'll do much to stop bleeds. (+ the obvious risk of simply setting the patient on fire) Now in terms of treating an artery bleed where a tourniquet can't reach we have a few options already. Hemostatic powder such as quikclot, hemostatic gauze, etc. https://www.medgadget.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Xstat.jpg Revmed or whatever is working on a big syringe that squeezes out a bunch of gauze sponges impregnated with hemostatic powder that rapidly expand in the wound channel to stop bleeding. I've never had to use hemostatic substances so I don't know how well they actually work but I have heard they supposedly are effective even in cases of arterial bleeding. Road flares are for hemorrhoid's. Bad hemorrhoids require a 30 minute flare.
