Important update on areas that can see these events from Vandenberg launches. The multiple photos and videos from St George Utah clearly show that these southbound Starlink launches can be seen in other states than just California and Arizona. It is about 425 miles from a California island that the rocket passes by to St George Utah. That opens up Las Vegas NV and nearby to seeing it. On another Starlink launch in 2022 a woman in Alpine TX (southeast of El Paso) caught the jellyfish. If the rocket was about halfway down the Baja Peninsula, it was about 675 miles away. The second stage would have been higher than when it passed Los Angeles.
If you are possibly in range consider going out to look. If you are in the southern part of the US viewing area (like El Paso TX) initially it may be towards the west heading to the southwest. If you are more to the north of the viewing range you may need to look more to the southwest. Scan left and right as the rocket ascends. Try to find an elevated viewing spot with no/minimal obstructions in the viewing direction. As with most Starlink launches, delays can occur that could impact when the rocket (primarily the second stage) is in sunlight. 1) Next event: Starlink 8-1 on 6 April 2024. Launch time 7:25 PM PDT/MST Note: the launch time has been switching between 7:25 and 7:31 PM PDT/MST Discussion starts on page 2, post 17. 2) Original event of this ongoing thread: Starlink Group 7-18 will launch out of Vandenberg SFB on 1 April 2024 and currently the launch time is 7:30 PM PDT/MST. Sunset in Los Angeles is 7:14 PM PDT and civil twilight is at 7:39 PM PDT. Launches around civil twilight can produce the jellyfish effect. This could result in similar jellyfish effects during late in the booster burn and through the second stage burn as was observed several days ago. Note that Starlink launches can be delayed or scrubbed. If delays occur, gradually the point during ascent when the booster and or second stage become sunlit will become higher. That is because the sun is getting lower below the horizon. I am assuming that it could be that you have a launch time such that there is no jellyfish effect right after staging but a minute or two later as the second stage rises higher that the sun will become visible and the jellyfish effect is seen. Personally I would watch until it is gone just in case. 18 March 2024 launch. Example of jellyfish effects. SpaceX Launches Starlink 7-16 Falcon 9 Rocket 3/18/24 |

Excellent!
I saw the jellyfish here in Prescott AZ the last time they launched that profile. And it's supposed to be clear here tomorrow night. |

It's possible that I'll have decent viewing for that. I'm wondering if I should pack a MAK-90 or just use a Canon 300 mm fixed lens on my DSLR.

I live 100 mi from Vandenburg. I will be watching. Thanks for the notice.
Sometimes there isn't much to see. Sometimes it is really beautiful. I always hear the sonic boom from Falcon 9 launches. |

View Quote I don't know but some people have a longer focal length system are able to get the views of the fairing halves falling away and using their thrusters and the booster using its thrusters. Those are amazing videos. But they are also able to zoom out some to get everything. Too high a magnification/focal length may be limiting. Of course if you want close in details, go for it. |

Pushed back to 8:30 pm, AZ/CA ( MNT/PDT) time

View Quote I thought you had a 25-135 mm lens. That might be good to get wider views yet some closer. I don't know how wide the cloud is after second stage ignition and giving it 15-30 seconds to fully develop. Is it 20 degrees? 30 degrees? If I were to get video I would start with the 25-135 mm lens. Either use a tripod or be able to support your arms on a car roof or similar. Avoid people, power lines and other distracting objects. If you can manually set the focus to infinity that could prevent the focus hinting you see on some videos. You can always switch to the 300 mm lens after payload fairing separation if you wish or just get what you can with the 25-135 and on another try the 300 mm. I see your equipment in the main SpaceX launch thread. It sounds like two different cameras. |

All of my Canon lenses have a manual focus setting. I have a 1.4x tele-converter for my 300, which makes it a 420 at the expense of one f-stop. I have two bodies. I was loaded for bear last night before the launch got scrubbed. Thanks for the tips! |

Launch time is now 8:54 PM PDT. That may be well past good jellyfish launch time.

I was checking sunset times for Prescott AZ compared to Los Angeles and it is currently about 23 minutes earlier. In the future, I will expand the notice time based upon darker skies in Arizona and not just the west coast. It only gains 23 minutes but that could mean Arizona can see jellyfish but it is too light along the west coast.
I do not know if the ascent is visible in any part of New Mexico. You don't need my post to look. Just wait for a suitable launch around civil twilight to TBD time after for your location and watch for a launch in that time frame. I do a reasonable job of keeping the launch info up to date. First post on the first page here. |
