So this year my dad was the one in our group to get an elk with his custom .338-06

Attachment Attached File

So it's time to cook some elk steaks

On goes the rub and they sit overnight (recipe at bottom)

Attachment Attached File

Then we start the fire and open up a can of amazing Mother Road IPA

Now it's time to let the coals and the mesquite wood do their magic

Coat with some adobe butter and let rest

Dinner time with my Combat Elite and a glass of Del Bac whiskey (since it was my dad's rifle that killed the elk, I didn't include one)

Amazing stuff.  Probably cook to a rarer (is this a word?) temp next time.

Don't have pics of the rifle and I've requested load data.

But my youngest has already declared tomorrow to be elk and egg breakfast burrito day.

One of my uncles had a 338-06 Ackley.  It was an Elk killing machine.  BTW the Elk steaks look delicious.  Elk T-Bones my absolute favorite cut of meat.

Nice work, OP.

Went to your provided link site and printed the recipe & instructions for use with my cow elk steaks.  Will give it a try!

Again, nice job on your dinner pics.

I always like mine more rare than that.   But since I started bow hunting elk 3 years ago, I may never get anymore elk.

If you get tenderloin steaks, try them cooked the same way, but rare.

Yum! I'm gonna try that recipe with a tri tip. Because somehow my elk freezer is empty.

10/10. This is how dinner pics are supposed to be done.

PSA: If you've never had elk meat then you're missing out. I've seen people that swear up and down they don't like wild game meat (i.e. venison prepared by cleatus the slackjawed yokel) fall in love with elk. Its very mild and while you wouldn't confuse it with beef you wouldn't think it was game meat either.

Damn that looks like a fine young elk.

Congratulations to your dad.

Elk would be the only red meat that I would give up beef for. And this comes from someone who was raised on grass fed, grain finished for 90 days beef. Beef that was put in the barn and fed grain mixed with molasses for the last 30 days of that time.  Doing it that way gave it some great marbling.
