Does it make you feel better that ebay loses money on these 10-15% off promos?

Remember, they're not the seller, merely the host platform.  The seller doesn't eat the discount, ebay does.

Ebay gets 10% of all sales...
If they offer 15% off, they take a 5% loss on all sales with that code...

If you DON'T like Ebay, you should be buying as much as you can with the code right?

Edit: Bought a Bonavita coffee maker for $50 because of this thread

Ebay doesn't pay for these coupons...Ebay sellers do. That is why if you watch items closely they are magically more expensive on coupon days...because the sellers eat the discount.

Example:  Milwaukee M18 Fuel mid-torque impact gun is $130 on a non-coupon day...it then jumps to $150 on a coupon day. Not much of a sale when the sellers raise their prices to account for the cost of the coupon that they eat.

Seller specific coupons work like that, but this is a site-wide coupon that ebay eats the cost of.

I just saved $100 on a bunch of silver coins and bars.  bullion category and a lot of coins and money is excluded, but some sellers list their products in the wrong category.

In that case I stand corrected, I was not aware Ebay offered their own coupon, I only knew of the ones that sellers eat in order to increase traffic. Good to know.

The thing I just bought and had been watching was actually 'on sale' and cheaper today than it was yesterday. Then added the 15% on top of that and got it for over 150$ less than if I would have bought it yesterday.

When did this change? I sold on ebay for years and that was never the case - though I stopped a year or so ago. In fact when your items would be up for sale during a coupon day it'd sell for more. Ebay has been doing this to boost traffic.

Thanks OP, I bought a new phone, saved me $60

The "area" applies to the category.

This has been a normal work around for the codes for a long time.

Example: 15% off sporting goods code, if someone listed an electronic item under sporting goods the code would usually still work.

So attempt to find someone selling silver that isn't listed under the excluded categories.

Because the total discount is capped at $100.

Wrong. They get more expensive because sellers raise their prices. It still ends up being cheaper than the competition. So the buyer may only save ~$7 instead of the $30, but it is still a savings.
