National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton. You will need at least two days there. Even then, you won't get to truly see everything.

If running I-80, Omaha Zoo and the Strategic Command and Aerospace Museum just west of Omaha. Plan 2 days. 1.5 days for the zoo (it is absolutely massive) and .5-1 day for the Museum

If he's running I-80 in Sept, mostly what he'll see is corn. A lot of corn.

Check out the new Military vehicle / tank museum in Dubois Wyo. Little town of about 2000 on the way to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole.  Guy has a huge private collection on display , spent 30 million last year to put up a 120,000 square foot building to house it.

Go though wind river canyon on the way to Cody to check out the firearms section of the buffalo bill museum. and the dug firearms museum. Then hit the chief Joseph trail north of Cody and go over the Beartooth pass.
Then circle back to the bighorn mountains and check out the medicine wheel. There ya go

Just drive as fast as you can until you are in the West and spend more time there.  You are going to Yellowstone, right?

Looks like you already have what I was going to suggest on your list. Don’t forget Sitting Bulls Crystal Cavern and Crystal Caves if they are open. And Crazy Horse. All this has probably been mentioned. I only read the OP. Lol!

If taking I-80 through Nebraska stop at the Arch in Kearney (about the middle of the state).  It's a museum dedicated to the history of transportation through the Platte River Valley,  including several of the wagon trails opening the west.

There's also the Stuhr Museum Of The Prairie Pioneer in Grand Island a few miles east.  And Pioneer Village Museum in Minden a few miles to the south.

Seems like there's another pioneer history museum in the area too, but it's escaping me right now.

These are essential.

Also, depending on which route you take:

Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Mothman.
Snake Mound in southern Ohio. Indian mound shaped like a snake.
Cincinnatus statue in Cincinnati.
Fermilab particle accelerator outside Chicago. A herd of buffalo lives inside the accelerator ring.
Cahokia in East St Louis. American Giza.
Gateway to the West in St Louis.
Paint Rock, Iowa. Indian petroglyphs.
Wind Cave. Right by Mount Rushmore.
Carhenge in western Nebraska. What it sounds like.
Chimney Rock, western Nebraska. Landmark on the Oregon Trail.
Little Bighorn.

Plan to spend an entire day at the Winchester Museum in Cody.

Also stop by Hell's Half Acre up near Casper, WY.  It's exactly as it sounds.  It's where Starship Troopers was filmed.

Dodge City Kansas is worth a night or two. Also the WW2 museum in Casper Wy. is quite a neat place. Many US Airmen died in training there. Many. I'd sure make time for a few days in the park.

Don't know how l forgot this.

Scott's Bluff, Nebr is home of Courthouse and Jailhouse Rocks.  Chimney Rock is in the area.

I also forgot Offutt Air Force Museum in Omaha.  Offutt was the home base for Stategic Air Command.
