Started with the original Steyr AUG optic I believe, predating any Eotechs.
As for the Eotech, the circle was for CQB, the center dot was for precise aiming. It is a great reticle design. Easy to find the circle in a hurry for across the room stuff.

I think it started with the Steyr AUG optical sight in 1977.

I thought it started with the TA-11 ACOG but perhaps it was the AUG.
Not eotechs anyways...

Not the ACOG. Not the EOTech.

It means the same as horseshoe of death but sounds cooler.

This.
Ayoob & other gun writers then referred to any & all, including ACOG TA11 with (at the time, red was the only color) “donut of death” that’s also a BDC or poor man’s mil dot for ranging.
But to be honest, i never heard the expression used with EOTech until this thread—I had 4 at one point.
I think it started with the Steyr AUG but it's most commonly used to describe the hollow circle reticle of an ACOG. I always thought of it as meaning that anything in the circle was going to be dead, but that's obviously an oversimplification. [edit:] I've never heard of an EO Tech's reticle referred to as a Donut of Death, and I've had at least 6 of them since they first came out.

I was drawn to it to try because of the name, then tried it, excellent. The best reticle out there imho.

Barney Miller - Landesberg, Vigoda and Soo talk doughnuts
I read the title and thought of the Xbox 360 ring of death, meaning your Xbox would never run again

I have a very early Aug I got in the 80s. Original owner had sent it back to have the circle dot optic installed. It came with the original one that is just the circle

Donut of Death came from the Steyr Aug's integrated optic in 1977, way before EoTechs.
