Those Earl Scheib commercials on TV were memorable. "I'll paint any car for 99.95" spoken in his slow southern drawl.
A bit ($10) before my time. Attached File |

No. I remember commercials for Maaco paint jobs, but never for that cheap.
|
|
I remember when an Earl Scheisse paint job was a lot cheaper than that.
|
|
I actually knew a guy who had one of their paint jobs. However, he did most of the prep himself. It wasn't terrible, and it helped sell the car asap.

Remember everyone, inflation is theft. Which is why they tell you it's only 2%, and that somehow even 2% is supposed to be good.

No but pepperidge farm remembers this topic from the other month.

No, but pretty sure I've bought a few cars over my lifetime that had one done.

View Quote Yea, my wife paid extra, $99, it was $69 or $79 at the time to get the inside of her door frames, inside of the hood and trunk painted on her Ford Pinto. Still wish we had that car. Tough little ride. It really wasn’t a bad job. She got a metal flake light blue, coverage was good and it still looked brand new 4 years later when we sold it. |

I have worked with a couple of people who got one of those paint jobs. Where good old Earl made his money was the body work to get it ready to paint. He said he would paint it, not prep it for painting.

Yes and I remember it was a case of getting what you paid for.
My buddy took his '57 Ford ragtop in for a dark maroon paint job and it came out with a color of purple not seen on a man's car in the mid-'60s. |
|
Can't even buy the masking tape, paper, and plastic to do that job these days.
|
|
We had one done in the early 1980's on a bug we had baja kit put on. There idea of sanding the fiberglass was to let the disk grind over onto the chrome headlight bezels. It wasn't a bad paint job except for the sanding crap. It lasted a long, long time. Good deal for $79.99.

I just called a body shop because the clearcoat is failing on the roof and rear drivers side door on my car.
To sand, paint, and clearcoat those two areas would cost somewhere between $1500 and $3000. To sand, paint, and clearcoat the whole car (I swear to God I'm not making this up) they said it would be absolutely no lower than $10,000. ETA: If I did it myself with $50 worth of rattle cans, it would obviously be a much, much worse job. I'm thinking my rattle can job would be about 5% as good as a professional job. But, it would only cost 0.5% as much. I can't see how the cost/benefit ratio works out on a body shop's paint job. |

If you really want to do a cheap paint job that will last, use tractor paint |

I went to MAACO for my repair because I knew the name from tv. Terrible idea.
|
|
My parents had one done back in the 70s I think it was 39.95 plus a bit extra to fix a few spots. As I remember it was a decent job and held up pretty good. The color they chose was very odd. We ended up calling battleship beige.

Ever heard of Earl Scheib homes? |

Quoted: I remember those commercials. I figured they used Krylon. View Quote We didn't have an Earl Sheib but I heard people mention him a lot. 30+ years ago there was another place in town that offered the same kind quick paint and did ads for them. Of course when he started paint was super cheap for anything before the EPA got heavily involved. Some for personal protection of the workers and whatever else they exhausted out. The good old days. |

That ad looks like it’s from 1958. No I don’t remember it, shit, my dad wasn’t born until years after that.
What’s the average age on this forum? I’m in my 30s and routinely see people post about shit I think my grandfather would barely remember. |

The value of the paint job has not really increased it is just that the dollars value has decreased. In 1990 if you paid 2.5oz of gold it'd be 1.5K. If you paid 2.5oz of gold today then it'd be over 4K. That's just for paint, not for prep. |

(It's in a can inside the can - you push a plunger on the bottom to release it and then shake it like crazy.) ETA, I might cut one open the next time I get one. I do kinda want to see exactly how they do it. |

Legend has it that some of Jimmy Hoffa’s ashes were placed in every paint gun in the late 70’s.

If you shop around locations looking at cars in the "waiting to pickup" portion of the lot, you can find a pretty good spray guy and can request whoever sprayed X car to spray yours. I've done it a couple times over the years, and have always been satisfied with the results. |

Where I live the local VO-Tech school autobody used to paint peoples cars for the cost of the paint. Kids usually did a pretty decent job at it.

You mean the ones where they just paint over everything; lights, trim, grill......

When I wrote estimates, id get at least one all over paint job per week. I could tell whether or not they were wasting my time by telling them our paint jobs start at $3500, and that's with zero repair work, just remove and install trim, handles, mirrors etc
|
|
I fell for that trap.
They do not remove anything and they we even shitty at their tape work. Looks crappy |
|
I remember the commercials, but never knew anyone who got one.
I did get a $400 Maaco paint job on a vehicle once. I did all the prepwork, and just dropped it off to be masked and sprayed. Looked good for a daily driver. Still looked good a few years later when I sold it. |
|
I vaguely remember ads for $400 paint jobs, but not $99. What was gas back then, 30 cents a gallon?
|
|
I'm also old enough to remember when a Motel 6 room cost $9.99!
