Watching "Rear Window" on BBC this morning. Got into a discussion with Wifey about how old Jimmy Stewart was, and how hawt Grace Kelly was.
Wife remarked, "He was only 46. She was 28." I look younger, and I'm almost ten years older than he was. Do you guys think people aged differently back in the day? I remember 40-year-olds looked like they were 70, and 50 year olds looked like they were 90! |

Age, and perceptions of it, definitely seems to differ relative to looks these days.
I would say that 50 nowadays is the 30 from half a century ago. I dunno, just spitballin... |

Better food and nutrition nowadays if you choose to eat right. Everybody smoked back then.

Stress will age people. Jimmy Stewart flew

Dear God, yes. You don't even have to go that far back. Go rewatch just about any movie from the 70s-80s. The parents always look like they're at least in their 50s.
Perfect example----dad was 46 and mom was 40. Attached File |

It gets worse I’ve noticed, the older I get.
I’m seeing people 5+ years younger than me that I think I look younger than. Shrug. No idear. It’ll catch up with me soon enough. |

Easier life.
That'll end soon. Greatest Depression next stop! |

I was talking about this the other day. I saw a clip from the old Jimmy Dean show. It featured Hank Williams Jr. singing a song. If I were to guess on looks Hank looked to be about in his 30s. Nope, he was 14 at the time.

People don't smoke as much, they don't sunbathe as much, and things like the way people dress and carry themselves influences your perception of them.
Then there's the whole bit about perspective. Those are old people, they've always been old people, you're not that old until you look in the mirror. |

Missed it by a little, way fewer smokers and sunscreen used from a very early age.

Less sun, indoor and less physically demanding work, less smoking, hair dye, makeup, rogaine.

A lot of them went through a depression, a world war, and smoked. That'll age you.

Up until about 5 years ago people often mistook me for being a decade younger then I am. In the last 5 years I have seen job loss, death of a loved one, near death of another, financial issues, dealing with trying to stand up a business and now all the fallout from this stupid China virus. Appearance wise, I aged 15 years in the last 5. |

Does being a morbidly obese piece of shit make you look younger?
If it does we got the youthful look thing on lockdown. |

Fashion has a lot to do with it. The hairstyles, the clothes, the glasses, etc.
It's not just confined to the mid-20th century. I know a lot of women who in their 30s-40s looked like real-life Peggy Hill in the 1990s but were far more attractive or looked younger in their 40s-50s in the '00-'10s. |

Go pull a 40 year old soccer mom out of the suburbs and a 40 year old grandma out of the trailer park and compare. Soccer mom doesn’t smoke, eats organic food and uses sunscreen. Grandma numbs the hopelessness with pain pills, excessive booze consumption and picking up a fresh pack of cigarettes on the way to the laundromat/tanning salon in the middle of January. |

Allot of it is your perception of age as related to clothing and hair styles and the age of the pictures and film.
If you did your hair and makeup just like someone from 1950 and also wore the same outfit and had a pic taken with the same style camera and showed it to someone they would think you looked 20 years older. |

John Ashton was 36 when they filmed Beverly Hills Cop. He looks late 40s in the movies at best.

Both James Dean and Steve McQueen looked like my high school teachers pretending to be teenagers. Fast forward to the last 30 years when you have late-20’s and 30 year olds pulling off those high school student roles easily. For all the obesity, as a culture we still tend to have better health information than they had 70 years ago. |

George Lazenby was 29 when he portrayed Bond. He looked significantly older.
My dads senior photo looks like me now, in my 30s, but my hair line is a bit receded. |

I know the guys I started flying with at TWA were in their late 40’s to late 50’s. They looked like they were 70+. Wrinkles all bald or white hair. Most smoked their whole life and partied rock stars the first 20 years of their careers. A few of them saw combat in VN. But they weren’t the oldest looking. TC |

Today’s 32 year olds either go bald and keep it close-cropped, or full-on shave their heads and make it up with a goofy beard. |
