I think I read about this on a post here in 2014 or so. It had links to pictures of the story in a paper magazine or something.

Why would they classify that? I would think they would want it widely known our shit was worth 4+ of theirs.

The Russian pilots had a lot of advantages in Korea. They were flying  over home territory, usually had the altitude advantage and the Americans had limited fuel and endurance. The Americans could easily tell the Russian pilots by their advanced skill levels and referred to them as "Honchos".

Russian pilots in Soviet Air Force MiGs. They made the mistake of crossing their border to engage our guys who were bombing a Nork target.

They don't want the Russians to figure out that there were SIGINT specialists off their coast who were listening in to ground control. Remember,MiGs were ground vectored.

Both sides didn't want it to get out.

Some ejecting Soviet pilots were machinegunned by their comrades to prevent their capture.

My father was in the ASA in Korea, from 52-54, as a Russian interpreter. There is so much shit still classified from that time, most of which involves us or the Russians messing with one another, and sometimes killing each other.

He used to talk about messing with their vectoring, and the altimeter settings when they'd try to check in. We put quite a few of theirs right into the ground.

Neither side wanted to admit a lot of things that were happening, or I think war would have been inevitable.

I’ve wondered that myself.

While ADAF, I was involved in some classified operations.  I’m certain talking about them now wouldn’t affect national security but I’ve never been given the green light so I don’t say anything.

My uncle didn't claim two migs.  He didn't need or want the publicity (his inlaws lived in the workers' paradise).  Accomplishing the mission and getting home was more important.

It seems so from my interpretation. They launched from the Russian side and the Americans didn’t fire on them b/c they were Russian.  When the Russians started firing, the American pilot started delivering bunker busters to the Russian pilots moms.  I’m imagining that they kept it secret because they didn’t want to touch off a war with the Russians.

All of the above is complete conjecture so I don’t know if it’s true or not

Russian planes, Russian pilots, Russian markings and they left from a Russian airfield.

Now, a lot of Russians got shot down in Korea (some in Viet Nam) but they were pretending to be Norks.

The Russians declassified their version in 1990.

3 Soviet pilots were KIA in the action directly,  Captain Valandov and Lieutenants Palomkhin and Tarshinov. Captain Viktor Belyakov limped his damaged MiG home but was killed in a crash landing.

Some heroes are real and some are paper tigers.
I understand Americans are raised that way. Patriots with little education. So obviously I don’t judge their ignorance.

After all Americans still thinking they are the one who defeated nazi and isis.
