Imma start a thread like Kuraki but it’s gonna be pretty low brow in comparison. That’s said, this is my journey...

My first sheath I’ve ever made too.

I'd say weld the holes or something and glue those green dots on top so your knife doesn't crack at the holes.

Each hole is counter sunk. 1. Stress risers during heat treat are bad. 2. It’s s flared surface for the epoxy to hold on to. 3. If you are putting enough stress on a .250 piece of 5160 to break it; you’re abusing the fuck out of it.

Got a couple projects collecting dust. New neighbors and they live with their windows open. Noise ordnance of silence at 10pm which is when I work in my garage with the window open for some air. So, basically I can’t play til they decide to close their windows.

I had an unfortunate accident with a razor blade this week so I’m not doing much metal work while my hand heals. In the mean time though, I decided to make these. Thought it up this week while I was  bored. Casings are 50BMG

Those handles are cool. Sorry to hear you cut yourself. Hopefully you're hand heals up fast.

Been in a lul/rut and haven’t spent much time in the shop. Decided to get started on a new forge this week.

First I hooked up my “empty” propane tank to my grille for a few days with the bleed valve unscrewed just to make sure every last drop of propane was out. Then I drilled a hole and washed it out because it stunk to high heaven

Every single YouTube video on a propane tank build says you gotta unscrew the valve. Fuck that.

I decided to use the line of rust from the plastic label as a guide and traced it with a sharpie. I then cut the circumference ofthe tank with my angle grinder. I did this for ease of access.

I have a good sized roll of some kaowool. I’m going to trace the cut off “lid” twice and cut my end pieces tomorrow. I’m going to level the lid and put a ball bearing in it to find center and drill a pilot hole. This will give me a reference point when I cut the thru hole. Once my ceramic wool is in place I’ll spray it with rigidizer and weld the piece back together. I plan on making a rest on the bottom of the main opening. I’ll also weld some angle on the top to use as a guide for my “sliding door” of fire brick.

Hung out with Josh Prince today and forged a few billets. He was a finalist on forged in fire on the episode Kuraki was on.  He helped me a bit but then again I’ve never forge welded steel or used a hydro press and power hammer. Had a lot of fun and learned a lot. My billet ended up being

Wrought iron
.049 15n20
3/16 1095
2x .049 15n20
3/16 1095
2x .049 15n20
3/16 1095
.049 15n20
Wrought iron

Forged it down to about .250 x 2 x 11.
I think it’s gonna come out pretty slick.

Started fixing one of my projects. F’d Up the grind. Still got a lot to go. It was my first Hamon I ever made. Didn’t put much thought into it just sent it.

Also, in keeping with the .50 cal theme for shop handles; I made a handle for my 2x72.

Haha. I am king of jerry rigging shit. That was for my dust collection but has since fallen by the wayside. Need to re-arrange it. So, yeah, apparently my knife cracked during quench and I never heard it. Was hand sanding for some better definition in the hamon. Hairline horizontal crack about 1/8 from the cutting edge. I might finish it and keep it for a shop knife. Gonna cut a template because I do like this wharnie design. Even at 3/16 it’s quite light. Bummed though.

You can get various “grits” and get mirror finishes a hell of a lot fast than hand sanding. I just don’t have 100$ to spend on them right now. They do last a long time

They last a long time.  You can even recondition them with some cutting compound, or use it to vary the quality of finish they leave.

Every I see stuff you guys make, I'm amazed and awestruck.
Even if it's not the way you wanted it to look or it cracked or something, you guys still made that by hand.

I truly respect your abilities as Blade Smiths.

Thank you for sharing.

Been struggling with some personal demons lately and it’s kept me from the shop. Finally getting sorted out and have been in the shop a few days this week. Here’s some stuff I’ve been working on.

@Ludder093 asked me to make him a fixed blade Leek a long time ago. Unfortunately for him I’m ADD like a motherfucker.

Got all the forge scale off. A bit of a preliminary edge. Cut scales and glued up liners. Did the fit up tonight and the glue is curing right now. I think these scales are gonna come out real nice. Wish I had more of it.

Another Kiridashi I was commissioned to make... this one is going to have scales and simple jimping along the spine.

Here’s the striking pommel
