The DART vehicle is expected to crash into the asteroid Didymos and its moonlet Dimorphos at 7:14 p.m. EDT, at a speed of about 15,000 mph, with the goal of altering the moonlet's current path. Coverage on NASA TV begins at 6 p.m.

ITS TIME!!!!!!!!
this is it. I knew it what I've been prepping for. breath holding and standing vertical jump. it all comes together now. I've slaughtered the livestock and chickans. my body is ready. |

Well, knowing the current staff at NASA, what could go wrong?!?
Prob alter the course to strike us in 7 years…. |
|
I expect the deflection to put the astroid into a perfect collision course with planet Earth.
|
|
Since this is NASA, and if we all die from this...can we say that we died from diversity?

They are practicing to drop it on us.

I'm not trying to sound like a smart person, because I'm not. But isn't this a math problem? "Can we alter the course of an asteroid if we impact it" sounds like a math problem.
Maybe they are testing their ability, not "is it theoretically possible" |

If I were an evil eccentric billionaire, I would create a system to steer a planet-killer sized asteroid or comet on a collision course with earth in not too many years… like 1 or two generations away. I wouldn’t tell anyone for like a decade.
That would FORCE people to set aside their differences and create a solution or be wiped from the earth forever. Crazy like a fox. That’d probably make a good Bond movie. |

Factoring that speed, distance, and the every increasing latency of communications, I'd say just that is probably the limits of their math. |

Just putting a ton of kinetic energy into it wont do what they want. There's a bunch of other factors. Is they change the geometry of the asteroid, changing its center of gravity, mass moment of inertia, how it spins, etc.... What effects will it have? Its not nearly as simple as we think this thing weights 1,000,000lbs, we need x amount of force to push it 1 degree.... and that 1 degree will push its course millions of miles away since we hit it when it was so far from earth. Plus its orbiting the sun, I have no clue what type of orbit.... but its not just "going in a straight line" Also how will it change how it interacts with the other much larger asteroid right next to it. |

Wait, the camera that will show the results with was made in Italy?
Hope no one connected with Ferrari had anything to do with it |

Asteroid my ass this is the alien mothership and we are firing on it

Blonde appears to have a nice butt.
Oh crap it went to full screen. Never mind my previous comment. |
|
But what happened beyond getting some cool rock pictures?
Did the thing blow apart? Nothing? It's on it's way to hit us now? It's not hitting us now? |

Building public confidence using CGI, so when the planet killer comes the sheep stay calm until they “fail” just before impact. I like it.

Does anyone know if the cute blond (Dr. Elena Adams) that was speaking from mission control have a Friends Only page?

I’m sure that group of rocket scientists is extremely smart and all that but holy fuck are they annoying with their clapping and shit. Compare how disciplined and squared away the Apollo-era flight controllers were with that group.
Guess I shouldn’t be annoyed because they are going to save the planet. But I still am. And what the hell is that controller doing at -26:32 to impact? It looks like something out of an Airplane movie. |
|
|
Yeah, that was annoying...
The Italian camera was supposed to be off to one side of the pile of rubble, was launched from DART like 2 weeks ago. |

View Quote One of the main reasons, when given the choice between space, fixed wing, and rotary in aerospace classes I didn't choose Space. There is a ton of dedicated time spent in these projects, and way too much time spent waiting and hoping. The Apollo program had humans aboard and they were fighting a tech war with the soviets. I may be wrong, but I dont think I see clapping and cheering during current manned flights. Those guys have worked thousands of hours to design test, etc that thing. Took several years to build... Had to put it on a rocket, hoping it didn't blow up, then had to sit and wait for 6+ months just to see if what they designed worked. Many in that room probably have spent the past 4-5 years of their lives dedicated to this. They deserve to have an open bar in there for celebration IMHO. Watching them celebrate made me happy and excited for them. |

What annoyed me was the giggling as they were going through the final status checks. Guess I’m just getting old. |
