Wife wanted to go to one. Seemed like an overpriced school lunch to me. You go through a line, tell them what you want and they give you a mediocre portion of the day's slop. I thought it was just average quality with above average pricing. The pie was pretty good.......

Luby's?  It seems like more and more going to any restaurant is pretty much slop and over priced now.

Somewhere like K&W is fine once in a while. Old people love it, it's cheap, and at least it gives convicts somewhere to work and bring their kitchen detail skills into the real world. Truly an ass for every seat.

I'm not sure many people still visit them. I remember them being more prevalent in the 80s and 90s, only Golden Corral and one Chinese spot still alive around here as far as I know.

Cleburne cafeteria in Houston is epic. Top notch home style meats, fish and baked goods. Their sides are excellent and there’s a wide variety of real southern fare. Hell, even the Luby’s in Houston are worth a visit.

GC and chinese are buffets. I actually like them better. You have more of a selection and chose how much you want of any particular thing..........

I can't find any sit-down American home-style restaurants near me.  Always some crap like Applebees or TGIFridays - I just want something simple for an entree and three sides. maybe some pie.  A cafeteria would be an improvement over fuckin' Chipotle.

I remeber as a kid (70's-80's) some place (MCL, I think) my grandad liked to eat at. They had them around Indianapolis. They were pretty goog as I recall. I think the price has risen and the quality has fallen since then though..........

My dad was a manager at a Lubys  for over 30 years. His food was the best until the Pappas brothers took over and made the menu standard across all cafeterias.  I’m glad he retired after that.

I spent my entire childhood, and then some, at Lubys.

I'd like some Putsch's spinach salad - horseradish, mayo, Tobasco, cheese and hard boiled egg, celery, onions and cider vinegar served with a scoop.

Luby's used to be awesome years ago but started going downhill when they turned the drink cart people into quasi wait staff that expected a tip.

Also:

We had a local cafeteria when I was a kid. It was called "George's Buffet", but really it was a cafeteria line. The one thing they were renouned for was their fried oysters. Those things were like crack. Unfortunatley, they closed in the early 90's.......

When I was growing up between ages 8 and around 13 I would go to lunch and play pool most Sunday afternoons with my grandfather. We would always eat at a cafeteria, Lubys or Colonial. I would give a lot for another Sunday afternoon w my grandpa.

I remember both of those chains from when I was a kid in the 90s.

The absolute best meat and 3 cafeteria style restaurant on the planet is in Livingston, Alabama, behind the University of West Alabama’s campus.

The Touch of Home Bakery - ran by some amazing Mennonite women. If y’all are ever driving south on I-59 past Tuscaloosa, do yourselves a favor and stop there to eat.

+1,000 on Cleburne these days - the only one still good.

Luby's - not a chance..............the 80's was the end of good cafeteria food there.

Wyatts and Furr's as well...........Yuk.  Used to be great.

Loved me some Allbritton's CFS on Waugh Dr in the 70's- .............yeah, I'm old.

Honorable mention for Houston past (not cafeterias) Felix and JCI (JCI is horrible now days....)

Went to Furr's once back in college.  Waitress type lady comes around and asks if we want anything from the line.  I'm thinking to myself, I can go myself, just take these plates away.

I stopped in a cafeteria at a nearby university that is open to the public recently.

They had 4 seat tables and 6 seat tables, but most were pushed together, end to end, so they had 5 people in a row seated on each side.

I guess it saves space, but I didn't care much for the seating arrangement.

There were some separate 4 seat tables with benches along the walls, but not many.

The restaurant used to have its own website, but not anymore.

When my mother was at college, she told me the university cafeteria had free coffee cups, free hot water, free ketchup and free crackers.

She said that one guy would come everyday and make, "tomato soup" with crackers for a free lunch.
