Based on what I've read, I'd like to get the Garnett translation.  Any good hardcovers you recommend?

Why that particular translation? If you’ve not read it before I’d suggest Avsey or MacAndrew before Garnett. Garnett tends to wind up too much, A & M are much more direct. Given Dostoyevskys meandering prose I prefer Avsey.

Good question.  Main reasons include (1) she was closer to the original time than more recent translators, (2) her style seems more formal, which seems more appropriate for the time, and (3) hers was the first introduction of the work to the English world.  Based on some samples I read, I think I prefer her style, even if others may be more direct.
