British Navy mistook whales for submarines and torpedoed them, killing three, during Falklands War

THE British navy killed three whales after mistaking them for enemy submarines during the Falklands War, it has been revealed.

Two were killed by torpedoes fired from the anti-submarine frigate HMS Brilliant, and the third was attacked by one of the ship’s helicopters, The Plymouth Herald reports..

The previously undisclosed incidents are taken from the diaries of the ship’s crew, which have been published online by hmsbrilliant.com, a website commemorating the vessel's role in the 1982 war.

One crew member wrote of a “small sonar contact” that prompted the launch of two torpedoes, each of which hit a whale.

while unfortunate, doesn't surprise me.

and until you've looked at a sonar screen, developed firing solutions for suspected submarines, and launched torpedoes yourself, save your judgement of incompetency.

now add they were doing this for real in combat; firing on a whale is better than NOT firing on an enemy submarine (and getting killed yourself).

I've seen snap fires on tiny little whisps that did turn out to be the diesel sub we were looking for. its not easy or an exact science. many similar traces turned out not to be it.

Well, apparently submarines do sound like "whales humping, or some sort of seismic anomaly" after all.

My grandpa dive bombed a whale in WW2. They had intelligence about a Japanese sub operating in the area. He described it as a geyser of red mist.

Whales had just as much if not MORE time to develop torpedo firing submarines as we did.

Better safe than sorry when in combat and something unknown and big is getting danger close to your ship.

I imagine the detecting capabilities available wouldn’t really be able to differentiate one big object from another.

not too far off. all we really have is bearing and bearing rate as real info. then a computer/user input sets constraints and gives best guess of target course/speed/range. and refined over multiple own ship maneuvers. its like an airplane dog fight but S L O W.

did you spend an entire watch ( 6 to 8 hrs) developing long distance target solutions? that would be one boring ass game.

It came from a site compiling crew diaries from that particular ship.  Who knows how long it took for the site to be set up, material to be submitted, and some journalist to stumble upon it or be tipped off.

Exactly! With them being hunted and what not, they have had plenty of time to develop defenses, countermeasures, and stealth.

lol Damn, would've liked to see video of a torpedo hitting a whale. I'd imagine it'd be similar to the beached whale explosion, but smaller.

No accident.  This was a planned test to make sure their weapon systems could target organics in case of a seabed Kaiju incursion.
