People are still showing immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 from exposure to SARS-CoV-1, which was more than 17 years ago. Natural immune responses are far superior to vaccine immune responses. The reinfection rate is unknown, but given the relative inaccuracy of the tests (especially things like PCR) the known "reinfections" are well within the margin of false positives on tests and more than likely within the margins of immunodeficient individuals. In addition, there is no reason to believe that any variant of the virus is more contagious than another. Scientific illiterates (who I am aware dominate the world now) simply take an obvious fact like the current strain is different from the previous strain and use that to claim that it's more contagious. No, it's simply a different genotype, and its ability to spread is no different than any of its 50,000 relatives. It simply happens to be the predominant strain right now.
If the vaccine works, it will prevent transmission. If the vaccine works, it will work against all known variants of SARS-CoV-2. In either case, naturally acquired immunity is guaranteed to be better than vaccine-acquired immunity. By definition a perfect vaccine will be as good as naturally acquired immunity.
