late 80's or so, one of the best talk show episodes I ever saw was David Letterman Show, and Jerry Lewis was the first guest. It was so hilarious, Letterman kept him on for the full hour.

I'd have to agree on The Norm. Most people strive/work for conversational rhythm.  He does not have to because he destroys and rhythms of those around in his swath like a ninja.  They can never find footing if he choses.

The massacre he performed on The View was awe inspiring.

Yes it was. He is completely unflappable, which throws people off. He absolutely does not give a fuck.

Jonathon Winters....hands down.  Once he gets on a roll doing his improv it is game over.

Norm is first, IMO.

Winters would take second on my list, unless Robin Williams was coked up. Then it would be a neck and neck fight.

Norm is absolutely the GOAT.

Every appearance he made on Letterman or Conan is gold.

And it's fine if you don't get it. You do or don't.

And I'm surprised that this hasn't been posted yet so here it is...

I was just thinking Mort's guests made for dangerous drinking times back in my younger daze, kinda like Geraldo. We had a lot of interesting times with that show.

But for me the classics will stand: Williams, Deano, Dangerfield, Dice could be good, Norm was unpredictable, Rickles is untouched, Frank had stories. The newer group is all pc bs worried and not worth the electrons to view.

It's tough.  I've heard some great stuff from Buddy Hacket, Dangerfield, Winters, etc.  I think Carson was a great talent and got the most out of his guests.  There's a lot of stuff on Facebook.  Honorable mention to Charo on Merv Griffin.  Because she was "interesting."

She's actually pretty attractive there. I never watched her stuff, but saw the characters on commercials. I assumed she was really ugly.

I just watched Milton Friedman burn Phil Donahue with a magnifying glass in his back yard.  Thanks for sharing, that guy was incredible.
