Tomahawks are neat. War-hammers are bad-ass looking. But efficacy for quickly engaging multiples (like a riot situation). I say baseball bat. Those other tools will get stuck on and in your attackers. What say you?

Aluminum bat shortened just a touch. Fill with concrete. Wrap with hockey tape.
Bonjour! |

Swords were kings of the battlefield for centuries as a defensive weapon.
Spear give you reach. |

I'm gonna go with baseball bat, for those with no training (this includes myself).

Bo staff for less-lethal option, short spear if lethal force authorized.
Outside the box: chainsaw. Nobody is going to try and rush in on you while you have that thing powered up. |

A good solid staff. Someone proficient with one can seriously do damage to multiple threats.

Cardio, seriously. Most people can’t run a quarter mile without gassing out.
I’m a BJJ guy, but if you’re fighting multiple people, some type of boxing or kickboxing would probably be your best bet. The goal would be to incapacitate one person quickly and change the odds to 1 on 1. Truth be told, if you’re going against 2 or more dudes that know how to fight and are aggressive, you’re probably screwed no matter what. |

montante would be extremely tough to beat since the weapon and technique were designed exactly for that purpose, but it takes time to get into the fight. great if you're aware of the threat, but as a day-to-day practical PDW, probably not the best.
naginata deserves mention, as does the halberd (though the latter is an antiarmor weapon that is a bit slower). clubbing-type weapons like a bat or mace don't belong the conversation--they just can't compete. |

A brake caliper from the bed of the truck swung by the hose keeps em at bay at a bar I used to go to.

OC spray. Everyone gets some spice and then run when they can’t see. You’re not winning a fight against a crowd.
Past that a thin light knife, go for the heart, neck and eyes. Check out Ed’s manifesto for ideas. |

I'm partial to the collapsible baton for real life.
For the zombie apocalypse, I've always said I would get a Halligan. |

Native Americans used a BAK & tomahawk, like demonstrates in “Last of the Mohicans.” Problem when the tomahawk sticks—not a problem with a mace, aka, trench club. The knife may be a tad short, but the knuckles help. |

A round-headed mace with a basket hilt. You want something that will kill or cripple on first hit, but won't get hung-up on body parts or clothes.

Brass knuckes with pointy or squared off lugs would decimate any poor fucker that was on the receiving end . Highly portable/concealable as well . Whatever sword , club , bat ensemble you put together please consider supplementing your arsenal with this handy little device. Pun intended.

Pretty much anything with reach 5+ft or more. A short blunt weapon will get you overwhelmed quickly by a large motivated attacking party.
