An excellent choice, but Carrera came to mind first when I saw the thread title.

I just looked it up - I never read the last 2 of the sequel books: Heretic and Savior

also haven't read the last 2 in the RCN series
I thought he kind of mailed it in for Sea Without a Shore and Road of Danger
and I stopped looking for the next books

Barnicke? Barnicke? He owe me money - hey, Barney!

Edit to add, missed being first on that one by a LONG shot! We did do the drill team routine in JROTC though.

Admiral Dame Honor Harrington is the best Admiral ever. Love that series.

Nobody mentioned Lon Nolan of the Dirigent Mercenary Corps? He was elected general twice, only man to do it. I think he might have given John Christian a run for his money.
Alois Hammer was never a general, Colonel only, though many colonels never fielded the firepower like that of The Regiment.

Unless I'm mistaken, he didn't know he was sacrificing anything for real.  It was all a simulation to him.  But, he did find a way to defeat an entire alien race with decades old equipment.

With a Deus ex Machina magic machine which meant one bullet destroyed an entire planet and a means to communicate instantly across the galaxy.

I got a Webelo who could handle that level of over match.

Hell, Bean was the better general anyway.  He can't even compete in his own fucking fictional book!

Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Lord Solar Macharius (Alexander the Great, in a 40k Imperial Army (the bullet catchers) uniform)

"The meaning of victory is not to defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavors, to crush utterly his every achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Lord Castellan Usarkar E. Creed, Governor Primus: Cadia (again a regular guy in a universe filled with demons, gods, genetic supermen, who somehow still wins and wins, until the plot dictates he loses).
