I would imagine they have more than their fair share of middle-of-nowhere type places they have to police though. |

Australia is fucking huge and very desolate once you get off the water. I'm guessing it's to get RF range on their radios. I couldn't imagine what getting some voice/data over satcom could cost down there.

I once got a speeding ticket in AUS for 1 km/hr over the posted limit. Yup, 0.6 mph over the limit. (101 in a 100 zone) I doubt their equipment is even that accurate.
