I got two of those today, and I've gotten several in the past.
Strangely, they claim to know my password, and the password they gave is similar, or perhaps the same, as my very old password. Not sure what to make of that. I would ask for proof before sending any money.
Where I work, our files have been "hacked" a few times before. The hackers destroy or lock out files and then demand money for their return. I'm told we always make them prove they can restore the files by giving us a number of them back to prove they can even do it. If they can't, they don't get shit. Change all your passwords on your accounts now just in case it will do any good. |

A friend of mine got one of these. His reply:
"I wrote the scammer back and said, listen, honey, the terms of service on that webcam site could not have been more clear. I am happy to spend time with you for an agreed fee but you aren't allowed to record the encounter, ok? You owe ME money." ETA - pretty sure this latest round goes back to a LinkedIn hack/data breach. Time to change some passwords for sure. |

I've been seeing these more and more. Actually had someone today say they had a real password of theirs that they use on like junk sights. My guess is they are using leaked lists from somewhere. Ignore, change passwords if you want to be safe, and move on.

Its a scam. Some company gave away your password at some point. You can buy these email+password for a few dollars. The problem is how to make money from them. this is their latest idea.
I have had quite a few of these. I know they are scam artists because I don't have a camera on my computer, plus I got a ton of these (they all ended up in my spam folder). Ignore it - or if you want, complain to the FBI. If they ever catch one of these assholes you will add one more count to the charges just for you. |

I got an email like this on my work email... asking for $350 in bitcoin
I sent back "Get fucked, scammer" A week or 2 later our systems had a breach. No harm but just random shit and replies to every spam email I had. Don't know if they were correlated or not but I honestly thought it was fucking hilarious. |
