Seems like it's really ramped up in greater Portland metro area in the last year.
Seems like everyone is posting online about how their converter/s were stolen and who to go to locally to get it fixed. Is this really that profitable? Yes they have precious metals in them but how much are they really getting for a used one? It would maybe buy one fix for these tweakers? |

Thieves cut the catalytic converters off of two of our trucks at work this past weekend.
If you think it's bad now, wait for the mid-2020s when the price of palladium skyrockets even more.
Five minutes work for something you can sell for $50.
$500+ per hour. I am almost tempted myself. |
Very bad. Local trailer company had 70 stolen in one night. We park our work truck inside each night because they have hit our industrial park multiple times over the last year.
Yes! I had one defendant I represented on a cat theft maybe ten years ago. Now it's common for rural police to catch backwoods jerk offs driving arround with a sawzall and some cats.
Years ago these guys sometimes got some backwoods axe handle justice but now a days nobody wants to risk being the defendant themselves |
This is how we get more laws. We’ve had a few around here. Depending on the car it’s possible to total them with how expensive some are.
My sister just had her vehicles catalytic converter attempted to be stolen this last week.
The POS must have been spooked while cutting it off. Was about 1/4 way thru on the pipe. |
The thief would get shot and the victim would get a handshake from the cops in my area.
In broad daylight in front of my house, got them and their plate on video, called the cops, and they said put a copy on a memory card and bring it to the station, I said come pick it up, they said they can't, told them to piss off then. The neighboring town had some p!us a homeowner was shot at, I left a message for the detectives, and they were happy to get the info.

Getting our asses kicked in D/FW. They hit my daughter's car and my ex-wife's.

Had one stolen off a car or mine when I lived in the lower 48. Haven’t heard of it too much here. But scrap isn’t a big market here since it costs a lot to send back to the lower 48.
Not around me, all scrap sales need id. They also record your plate if they see it, or have enough to justify going to look. Bring in 5 lbs of copper and they want to see id, bring in 200 lb and they want id and will walk out and look at your plate.

We literally have a cat recycler here in Gulfport area that brags they pay top dollar for all catalytic converters. They have radio ads and tv ads. You'd think they'd know where all these are coming from.
It has become an epidemic on the coast. (South MS). We live in a nice neighborhood in Long Beach, and it has been hit several times the past months. Neighbor's newer 2019 F-150 got hit last month. |
The ones on my fleet of vehicles are worth $400 each used and take 5 minutes to cut off.
We lose 2-3 a month |
So somewhere there’s junkyards buying these by the truckload from shady mofo’s no questions asked.
If you want to stop this, start with those buyers. |
They hit all four of our company trucks before the holidays. Second time it has happened in the last 16 months.
Yep. They shut down our local Boy & Girls Club by taking the converters off all four buses. Took a few days to get those vehicles up and running again.
If it's in your area it's in other areas andbthat means it's everywhere
Yep. I refuse to leave my pickup at work and take a van home. They hit us and the day care next door recently. A meth head with a jack and battery operated sawzall will work harder than they ever have at a real job.
I'm hearing more happening closer to me lately. Good luck to them with my zoo.
Not yet in my AO but plenty of online friends across the country have been hit. One guy lost all on his fleet of work trucks and another lost it on a dozen RVs in his inventory. Not surprising they all seem to be left coast.
They busted a small junkyard just west of here about three months ago. Guy had containers filled with them.

Cats are worth a bunch of money right now, a large GM sells for around $700 at the scrap yard.
Toyota's are the most stolen around here, they sell for $2-300 each. The shame of it is you cant buy new ones now to replace the stole ones. Vehicle has to sit untill they are available. |
It was really bad at the Outlets Mall in Sevierville, TN a few years back. Dozens were being hit at a time. Recyclers now have you show receipts for new catalytic converters before taking your old ones in for recycling.
I had put new cats on my '97 Z71 years ago. Had to show the receipt for the new ones. Guy looked under my truck to see the new ones installed. Got back a little over half of what I paid for the new ones. You still here about them being stolen around here periodically. But not as prevalent as just a few years ago. |

A van a work just got ganked. Seems Nissan van cats are in high demand, not sure if there's a black market for them or they're particularly high in platinum.
Replacement is costing $6k. |

Not all catalytic converter thefts end well for the thief.
Suspected Catalytic Converter Thief Dies From Being Crushed By Car |
Very much so out here, even in my super boringly safe suburb and surrounding areas. Multiple reports in broad daylight of this happening
Supposedly the Prius and either the Honda CRV or Toy Rav4 (or both) cats are super valuable. |
At work we are seeing one or two a month minimum. I’m glad to be driving a car that’s too low to comfortably climb under. The work trucks are all easy pickings.
Big thing in my AO. I park behind a locked gate fortunately.
Local scrap yard will only accept them 1 per day unless you have proof of being in the auto/exhaust trade. A town close by has had a spate of vehicle break ins the last couple weeks. People not locking their doors, then being outraged when thieves rummage their stuff. |

Friend of mine had one partially cut off, something scared them away apparently. But I don't think is that wide spread here, but it happens.

Someone stole the battery and brake fluid cap off of a work truck we keep parked behind one of our remote offices. The battery I understand. The brake fluid cap???? |
Yep, co-workers daughters car just had one stolen. He asked me to come up with a way to stop it from happening again. I suggested he move but that does not work for him so not sure what to tell him.

Not that Ive heard of.
Any junkers we tow in get the cats hacked off right away before anyone gets any ideas. |
