Would it be kept in Virginia or North Dakota? Does the gun work or can it be made to work? Is ammunition available or can it be made? I have money but I am not very mechanically adept. Any SME's available to keep it running? The idea sounds good but there are questions to be answered.

It aint the buying an old tank that's the problem. It's maintaining it.
You got a source for old soviet tank parts? I don't think VatoZone carries track links for those. |

For fuck’s sake, I haven’t even bought the HF radio yet and now we’re talking about armor??

Do I get any sort of free gift for attending this Tank Timeshare seminar?

Quoted: There I was, thinking about how my old roommate and a few buddies went in and bought a couple planes together. Then it hit me...people buy planes together all the time. One guy can fly a plane though- tanks and armored vehicles have a crew of 3, 4, sometimes even 5. I want to buy an armored vehicle. You want to buy an armored vehicle. Why don't we all get together and buy armored vehicles for fun and adventure? Some armored vehicles are surprisingly inexpensive. Most are cheaper than a nice new sports car. They cost to buy track armored vehicle is cheap the maintenance is the expensive part!

Seems like a business opportunity. Basically like a timeshare, where maybe 10 people get to own part of the tank, and get together on weekends to drive it around. You buy a share, then pay ongoing fees to maintain it.

If I had the ducats, a Soviet PT-76 amphib would be my vehicle. Cross rivers! Laughs at snow. Also consume less fuel than a Tiger I.

If it floats, flies, or fucks shit up, it's cheaper to rent!

Right now Israel has several Merkava 1s sitting wasting away. If you import then they could be a good choice.
|
|
It needs to have a working main gun or it sucks. Just my dumb opinion. I had thought about how cool it would be to own a Sherman, because I liked those tanks as a kid.

But why would you sell? Hell, I would sleep it it and follow that time honored Armor mantra "Death before Dismount!" Of course I would have to sleep in it after House Hold 06 saw it getting dropped off. |

Hell yeah. If anyone in certain flyover states are in - im in.

Merkava: The perfect Tank? |
|
|
Are they really that cheap? What's 200k you in terms or reliably? Also does AAA cover roadside tank breakdowns?
|

If you can’t have a main gun, quad .50s and a coax would be a reasonable substitute.

In the 80's it was a truism that it took 8-10 hours of maintenance for every hour of driving. Who is going to do your DS and GS maintenance. Have you ever pulled a pack, Bro? ETA: No matter who does your DS/GS maintenance, I can guarantee you that they will call at 15:30 on the Friday before a long weekend to say "Your shit's ready. Come get it!" |

Before I commit I need to know, is the main gun functional? Because its important.

If I win the lottery tonight we’re all getting tanks and some Swift Boats and a training center with a moat and alligators.

Turreted light armored vehicles like Scorpions and such could have a jack leg mechanic weld up a mount for a Barret M-82 instead of a NFA controlled Destructive Device. 10 rounds of semi auto 50BMG isn't as much fun as an MG but easier and cheaper, perhaps, and beats the hell out of harsh language. Also makes it anti-material instead of just a glorified woods runner/APC. But that's a poor mans thinking. I saw fully restored Scorpions for $20k once...

I'd love a ferret or any tank sitting in one of my sheds. As stated it's the maintenance issue that sort of make it a pipe dream. If anyone needs a place to park one in Kansas, I might be able to help keep it out of the weather.

I only have limited experience with tracked vehicles like the Bradley M2 and the M113. Does it cost less to maintain a wheeled armored vehicle? Also, would the ongoing operational maintenance footprint be less than a tracked vehicle?

I have a slant back hmmwv with a chickenschield turret.
You guys are way behind. |

I would love a tank
I'll settle with a 50. Mounted Tacoma though |

@Ben
Are you familiar with the Americans in Wartime Museum in Nokesville? If you're seriously looking into it, I would talk to the owner. https://www.nmaw.org |

I want the Toto Ferret only not stripped down like theirs.
