I remember being at Bragg, falling in and marching to the medical clinic for our swine flu shots, on a Thursday. Monday, we are all back at the clinic for physicals, since over the weekend folks starting dying from the shot, or developing Guillian-Barre syndrome.

The funny part about the Swine flu is that H1N1 (what they were worried about) wasn't even the primary influenza type.
It was a pretty average year statistically for influenza, with ~20k deaths. I think comparisons to the c word are a little off, given the excess mortality numbers. |

3d BDE, 3ID, fall of 1976. 1,800 men in my battalion got the swine flu shot after morning PT, and by 10:00 pm most of us were in our bunks with fevers. Very few were at morning formation at 4:45am the next day.
Most Army personnel in Aschaffenburg were sicker’n dawgs for a few days. I never had any after effects that I know of or heard of anyone else did either. |
