Midway recently had an exceptionally good price on an AR Stoner 9 mmm upper that I bought. I went the range today to shoot it for the first time. I put it on my PSA 9 mmm billet lower that has functioned perfectly for thousands of rounds
The initial shots proved it to be single shot. It would pick up a new round from the magazine but it would not reset the trigger. I figured it just needed to be broken in so I shot 20 rounds that were individually in the magazine.  I then tried a mag with 2 rounds to see if functionality had improved.
There was a small explosion. The gun had doubled and there had been an out of battery detonation.
There was intense pain my forearm.  I looked and the cartridge had penetrated my skin and punctured a vein with what appears to be the case head. Blood was pouring out like water out of a faucet. Having a medical background,  I new to apply direct pressure.  While I was sitting down applying pressure I noticed a steady stream of blood accumulating in my lap. The other had cut my chin.  So had to apply pressure with both hands
Not the typical range trip. I'm ok and in fact shot for 4 more hours after homeostasis had been achieved Attachment Attached File

Glad you're okay and it wasn't more serious

What brand of ammo was you using?

I had a couple smart assed comments. But instead, I'm glad you're OK.

I was using Wolf steel case. The original PSA  upper has functioned perfectly for thousands of rounds with Wolf steel. It eats it like popcorn

That's awful brother, and I'm truly sorry it happened to you.

If there is a silver lining, at least a piece of anodized aluminum shrapnel didn't wipe out one (or both) of your eyes.
Link Posted: 7/26/2020 5:40:46 PM EDT
So you stayed and shot for 4 more hours?
Link Posted: 7/26/2020 5:40:49 PM EDT
Tula ammo?

Yikes

That's one way to ruin your day.

Glad it wasn't worse. After the pain subsides I'd be pissed.

I'm glad you're okay, we can't afford to lose any conservative voters at the moment

But have Larry call you, just in case

Oof!
Link Posted: 7/26/2020 5:41:25 PM EDT
At this , there is no way that I can trust this upper with any kind of ammo. I expect a full refund from Midway.
Link Posted: 7/26/2020 5:42:06 PM EDT
I could tell you have a medical background by your black New Balances and white socks.

Glad you survived.

IDK what it is about the 9mm uppers.

I built two and they were always finicky.

At one point I was mixing/matching BCG's, uppers, heavy springs and it was doing doubles and triples. . . I looking at one of the ejected casings on the ground and you could tell I was close to an OOB kaboom.

I stopped building those. I'll just use my Scorpion, Sub 2000, Roni, etc

I recently assembled a Stoner LPK in a lower I had laying around. It required a ton of filing on the disconnector to function without  double firing on trigger release.

Will not buy their shit again.

Kudos on being one tough SOB .   But why didn't you go to an emergency room ???  At least to be checked for other shrapnel .

But glad it was you arms and not your face or eyes .

Glad you’re ok...but thats why i don't trust explosives to garbage manufacturers.
The way i see it, these items you need to rely on and are inherently dangerous in their own right; to trust some janky manufacturing is asking for trouble. I need to know my shit is gonna work when i need it and not work against me in the process.

weird I've assembled 4 different AR-9's with no issues can anyone explain how this can happen exactly?

Glad you are all right. You can probably sell that upper for more than you paid for it, if that’s any consolation.

It’s a good idea to always break-in/zero new guns/uppers with your best circumstances (ammo, optics/sights, lowers/triggers, etc.).  Range trips are too expensive in time and $ to spoil a day on cheap, suboptimal conditions up front. Imagine if the gun ran on good brass ammo first time out. Then if it chokes later on budget stuff, not as big a deal.

If the hammer isn’t resetting there is an interference somewhere. Blowback guns are dirt simple, but all the functional elements still need good alignment.

The same lower has functioned perfectly for thousands of rounds with  the PSA upper. It's not a problem with lower. By the way, I would never, knowingly, sell a dangerous device to anyone for any amount of money. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night

So out of technical interest - did you find the reason why this happened?

Yeah, but Homeostasis had been achieved.  Range fees had been paid and he had ammo left.

No idea and I'm not to try and troubleshoot. The problem with the trigger not resetting sounds as the the buffer weight is too much for this upper. Why it doubled is a mystery
