They’re fun at the range, and really make you appreciate decent guns.
That being said, if you don’t already have one, you certainly don’t need it, and unless you find a smoking deal you’re going to overpay badly. |

Ive got a few receivers I need to do some things with
I just cant really get excited about building a AK though |
|
I want one, in 7.62 but with all the modern 74 furniture and upgrades.

Meh, bought two more than 20 years ago... Put tons of ammo down range with them.
To me they are like a basic and crude tool. They don't look cool or pretty, not real fun to use, but you know they'll always work. |

I like them, have 3 in 7.62 and one in 5.45.
The 5.45 is an old Robinson Vepr K that is much more accurate than the others. |

During the post-Sandy Hook panic, I traded a guy a built AR lower (can't even remember what brand) for a milled Norinco MAK-90. To this day, I consider that one of the better trades I've made.

Palmetto State Armory GF3 AK-47 Review: Best US Made AK-47 Ever Or Junk? $599 |
|
When I can buy Russian 7.62x39 for $90/1000 again, I'll consider another AK. Until then, no reason to.
|
|
AKs are more enjoyable to shoot than ARs, and every variant and even individual rifle, has a unique personality.
|
|
ARs are awesome. AKs are awesome. Own both. Enjoy both.
From a purely $ perspective, sure, load up on ARs while they're dirt cheap but if you're a gun guy you "should" have an AK the same way you should have a 1911. I currently do not own a 1911 |
|
I had an early SAR-1 that was a good one. Probably shouldn't have gotten rid of it, but I'm not crying over it either.

*Edit. I’m done arguing with Anderson AR owners in GD about the value of an AK platform rifle.

Had a bunch at one time, kept a slabside Yugo underfolder and a milled SAM7 underfolder
|

I've owned half a dozen over my lifetime. I don't own one now, and won't again unless it's free, and even if it's free, I'll probably sell it and buy something better.

Got a few. Fun for the range, and good to know how to use if I'm ever ambushed in a junkyard and I have to use the favored weapon of trash people against them.
|
|
I've owned a few. Now, the only commie rifle I have left is a Russkie SKS, and a crapton of cheap surplus ammo in spam cans to feed it for the next 100 years.
I just like the SKS better...an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. LOL |

They are junk. I have always thought they were junk. I passed on buying the $200 Mak-90s in the early 90's because they were junk. I bought AR15s instead. It was a good decision then and remains so.

I have 3, a 74 and 2 47's. Took a few classes with them but don't shoot them much these days. Every gun owner should have one if you can get one cheap enough.

Got my Yugo folder a few months ago for $450!
Replaced an Arsenal SGL-21/73 i paid $750 for, from SteyrAug. |

Are milled AKs worth it over folded versions? View Quote Arsenal SAM7 series milled rifles are excellent shooting rifles, but not as accurate as Veprs. |

Won’t get another |

If you own satin diapers, and NO AK variant...
You WILL be purged from American soil with the rest of the human trash before August... |

Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground.
But I do have a WUM-1. I like the statement above: Everyone wants to shoot an AK until they do. |

5.45 ruined me on 7.62. I love the 74's. If I need anything bigger, i'll grab my m1a.

AKs are real fun to just blast at the range at water bottles and whatever else. But that's about it, IMO. I have had them all jam on me, yet my 4 AR15s have never had a single jam. And I know it's odd to say, but ARs are super boring to shoot. ARs are just so accurate and reliable, plus I've been around them since 2002. So, I don't find I enjoy shooting them at the range all that much. But the AR15 is the first and best choice for a fighting gun because of how user friendly, reliable and accurate it is.
The only edge the AK47 has over the AR15 is it has like half as many parts to dissemble and clean. Otherwise, the AR15 is easier to reload and operate. Sorry, I got off track. |
