A Baofeng rated 5W Tx actually outputs about 3.8W RMS and the 8W units about 6.7W on my SWR multi meter, FYI. The whip antennas will give you a screwy meaningless return on the 70cm band, but they will give greater Tx range and much greater Rx range. I have three. My buddy has a HAM extra and is serious, I just have a general.
The nearest repeater to you DH is probably Poteau on 70cm, but if you're in hilly terrain, you'll need elevation to get LOS. |

It's recommended you check SWR on any accessory antennae especially third party before using it to TX because if the SWR is too high, you can release small amounts of very important magical smoke. Any antenna is fine for Rx.

SWR is Signal Wave Reflectivity, (it's on the exam) and what happens is part of the signal wave reflects back into the radio instead of escaping the antenna because it isn't tuned properly, and that energy has to go somewhere, so it heats things up quickly.

There's a story that Schwarzkopf once threw a report at a staff officer, shouted, "I'm not normal!" and threw him out of the tent or CP. The staff officer didn't know what to make of it until he noticed he'd mistyped To: Gen H. Normal Schwarzkopf.

View Quote I'm studying for the General test right now. Could probably pass with minimal study time. Problem is, there is absolutely no testing around me, everything is shut down, none in-person or on-line. |
