Disappointed that Skin Bracer is not on the list...

https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/6-forgotten-drugstore-colognes-and-aftershaves/?mc_cid=d6a2440999&mc_eid=d8b48b00fa

Hai Karate got an honorable mention if only for the marketing schtick.

British Sterling wasn’t too bad either.

They left Master Bay Rum aftershave off the list.

It's not typically sold in drugstores...not any that I've been in.

Sally Beauty Supply used to sell it and then stopped. I find Master-Wellcomb products in "beauty supply" stores that cater to persons of color.

The last time I saw it, or bought and used it, was at MCRD SD in 1984

Old Spice was the shit!  My dad always used that.

A popular one with the younger amish was Coty Musk

Could've sworn i bought mine @ CVS many years ago, but you may be right. Walmart carries it as well, but they're not really a drug store either.

You may very well have gotten it at CVS. Unfortunately most of the mainstream drugstores...and I think nationwide we're now down to CVS and Walgreens...have streamlined their shaving offerings to multi-blade razors, cartridges, and canned goo and not much else.

I used to buy Pinaud Bay Rum at Walgreens but stopped using it because it smelled like a clove avalanche.

I have no idea why anyone would want to buy Masters Bay Rum but you can get it on eBay.

I wondered if my father's favorite would be in there... it was: Brut.

Pretty sure he wore it primary to cover up the beer scent.

[Last Edit: ThePontificator] [#11]
Like Aqua Velva, Brut is ubiquitous. I can't imagine any drugstore or big box not selling it.

Not hardly. I just bought a bottle.

For whatever reason the author didn't include it on the list.

Dollar General sells a smaller-size.

Heehee, a number of years ago now I heard that the glass bottles of AV were on their way out, so I went to a couple of CVSs and bought up all the Musk and Ice Blue I could find. I'll bet I still have a half dozen bottles (glass) of the musk and 1 IB.

And contrary to popular belief, they haven't gone rancid.

Maggard Razors has the Spanish Williams version of Aqua Velva in a glass bottle for $22 + shipping.

They describe the formulation as being "more refined".

But $22 tho

I still have Stetson in the cabinet, probably haven't used that in 20 years and Skin Bracer cooling blue, probably haven't used that in about as long. The only two others I have are Mankind [old GF gave that to me] and Eternity. That was what Dad used to use.

Aqua Velva’s biggest selling point has always been the cooling menthol that soothes away razor burn

I suppose it does, after the burning from the alcohol goes away

From that list I have old spice, aqua velva blue and musk currently on hand and have used that clubman stuff in the past

I always liked English Leather. Still use Stetson on the rare occasions I wear a fragrance. While not sold in stores, who else wore the Avon men's fragrances that came in bottles shaped like cars, or airplanes and the like. I went through a period in the 80s wearing the original Old Spice. It seemed to attract women with Daddy Issues.

I've collected VW stuff for close to 35 years now, so I have a VW-shaped bottle of Avon Spicy.

Bottle is cool, but the cologne is a definite "no".

When I was a kid back in the 60's and early 70's the Avon Lady was a semi-regular visitor (along with the milkman and the Fuller Brush salesperson).

I remember those glass containers of Avon "Wild Country" aftershave. Cars, planes, etc.

Avon still sells Wild Country but the seasonal canisters/bottles are gone just a generic-looking bottle.

I might order one just for kicks to see if I remember it.

I think I read somewhere that Aqua Velva was originally a mouthwash! And that sailors used to load up on it to get a buzz when they were deployed. The company then added a bittering agent to make it undrinkable when they switched the product over to an aftershave.

When you were in the 8th grade the Wild Country wasn't bad. The same couldn't be said for some of the later stuff.

I had gotten a bottle the one time I used aftershave, I'm not sure what the hell I bought, but it was not the barber shop smell I was expecting from it.

When I switched to a safety razor and soap after reading about it on AoM, it made my wife jealous as hell because she's never been able to get her legs that smooth with a "normal" razor. Which typing that out gives me mixed feelings...

FTFY

Also, she did that after I got good enough I was using Feathers.

You would be surprised how good a Feather can shave some hairy ass legs when you're trying to teach your wife the right way to use a safety razor.

Me too!

When I was a boy in South Africa, I used to go to a wonderful barber shop. The barbers wore old fashioned white barber's tunics and they had large bottles of hair tonic and aftershave.

Clubman reminds me of those good old days.

Now I have to find pictures of the 1966 Springbok rugby team.  The barber had framed autographed  rugby pictures and I wish I could see these again.

I'm not gonna read the OP's link, or any responses in this thread and instead guess, sight unseen, Brute, Pinaud, Jovan Musk, Halston 101 (my personal fav back in the day) and Hi Karate.   Oh, and Old Spice. That's six amirite?
