since they dont make a 30.06 match round, and its reputed to be less accurate, then you might as well go w/ the .308

go any bigger, you might as well go w/ a .50 BMG

Federal Gold Medal .30-06 isnt match ammo anymore?

i never knew that Federal made a -06 match round....did they discontinue it?

ammoman has it, its the same basic load as the .308, 168 sierra match king except loaded in .30-06 trim

What the hell is a sniper round?

a "sniper" round is a term internet commados give to the round fired by precision rifles, thus making them feel "tactical"  it serves no real purpose other than boosting self esteem, much like magpul gear.

now a "round sniper" is the type you find at gun shows

What is the recoil difference between .308 and .30-06?

I've shot .30-06 out of a Mark X Interarms bolt action

I built my elk rifle with a Mk X 30/06, and killed a Muley spike so far away that the guy with me couldn't see what I was shooting at.  Two shots, STRAIGHT downhill, 450+ yds on the breaks of the Snake River; One in the liver, one in the heart.

This rifle has a very long throat so I cut the front out of the magbox and set the bullets out as far as I needed.  That enabled me to cram more powder into the case than my Dad used in his '06 Improved.

With a 190 grain bullet, the trajectory, and velocity was no great shakes.

It did beat the hell out of anything possible with that bullet in the .308, 'tho.

The '06 is better with heavy, high ballistic coefficient slugs.  With lighter bullets, it's wasted space.

I don't know, just ask the Army SEAL sniper that works at the local gunshop what he used in 'Nam while in the Marines.  I'm sure he'll tell you and tell you and tell you.........................................................................................................................................................................................

Answer to the KE calculations of the M829 120mm Armor-Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot with Tracer (APFSDS-T) round.
(Grid is approximately 4 cm)

Lets see now -- KE (ft lbs) = (W * V²) / 450240. That gives us (65,870 * 5480 * 5480) / 450436 which boils down to (hold on to your hats!) 4,391,500 foot pounds (that's right 4.3 MILLION ft lbs). Sectional Density = W (in pounds)/D². That gives us 9.41 / .6 * .6 which equals 8.4. (That's eight point four--and you thought your 220gr .30 cal bullet had high sectional density at .343 (that's "point" 343.)  The newer M829A2 round throws a 10.85 pound , .8" dart at 5512 f/s.  I'll leave it to you to figure out the details.

As an interesting side note, when fired at 55 degree elevation, it will travel 113,111 meters (123,630 yards or roughly 70 miles) and reach a height of 44,073 meters (48,171 yards or almost 27 miles). You are NOT safe if someone aims one of these at you. The accuracy of the dart is sub-MOA and the stated effective range is about 3000 meters (3270 yards). However, first round killing hits have been obtained out to about 6000 meters (6540 yards).

Sharp-eyed readers may note the 55 degree elevation for the maximum rage of this projectile. While spin stabilized cylindrical projectiles reach their maximum range in air at angles of between 25 and 35 degrees (45 degrees in a vacuum) the "dart is fin stabilized and not spun (the 120 mm gun is a smooth bore) and this gives it its maximum range at 55 degrees elevation--the fins keeping it point first through out its trajectory and providing some lift.  Click here for a discussion of projectiles fired at extreme elevations.

I really need to get some of that.  Expecially after my silencer paperwork goes through.

Make sure you have a barrel that will stabilize that round first.

Well, it seems that for a rifle with decent barrel life, you'll want a .308. If you want to shoot way overyonder, get the .338 LM, and if you want to blow shit up, get a .50.

Doesnt seem all that hard to me...
