While my favorite is Gaunts Ghosts series, the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series are close behind. I do hope Dan A. revisits Eisenhorn again, I miss him. I have been reading the Heresy books, started well but I was beginning to lose interest. LEGION won me back. Great book, nice twist ending. Now if Gordon Rennie would get back to writing more tales of the good ship Lord Solar Macharius and it's captain, Leoten Semper, then I'll be happy. Two books is not enough. |

Osht, not only am I a furry, but I'm a Warhammer 40,000 playing nerd! The horror! I've got two armies, a small (750 point) Space Marine army and like 2500 points of Space Wolves. Been playing for like six years now. I don't know about making noises or anything; we don't do any crap like that in my gaming group. The best part about it is getting some friends together and having some fun. Think about getting together and playing poker with some friends. Have some snacks, some drinks, and play a game together. Same deal, except instead of surprising people with a good bluff, we surprise people with drop pods full of superhuman warriors raining from orbiting cruisers onto the battlefield. |

Damnit, I was hoping this was going "My son has got on Warhammer, only now do I find out it's DEVIL WORSHIP!" I played Marines when I was younger and more foolish.  Now I play Inquisitor. Way more fun (for me, anyway, because I luff the fluff.) than 40k and only costs about $200 for you average warband. I'm geeky enough to bitch and moan about who Abnett got the Inquisition wrong, wrong, WRONG in Eisenhorn. And we just got 54mm miniatures back in Oz.

I have a friend that has $12,000 dollars sunk into his set up and has even had some items that can't be purchased anywhere custom made. He and his sons have a blast with it and since he makes 800K a year (net Profit after operating expenses and 75% reinvestment in the company) in a business that is growing daily, I am sure he can afford to spend the cash. I will say that after watching it being played I really saw nothing that I would enjoy in it but, my son loves it so, I am very likely to be buying him some battle sets soon. sw1217 ETA: I did not know there were interactive electronic versions (PC GAMER) of this. It was fun when I was 10 or whatever, plus it's good to get your artistic talent going painting these little fuckers but let's be honest...it takes too long for anyone with a serious job or personal responsibilities to paint up a little army of warriors and head to your local (vomit) comic book store (vomit again) to play this game. Buy the videogame and be done with it. It's like command and conquer, but with character and a good storyline. |
Similar in only the most broadest sense - it's small unit combat in the 40k universe, but that's where the similarities end. It's a "narrative wargame", which means the object is not beat the snot out of the opposition (although that is by no means banned) but rather to have a cool game with an exciting story, played with 54mm miniatures. Sort of a cross between a regular points wargame and a RPG like D&D There are no points in Inqy - so yes, you could have a Space Marine warband consisting of (and these are real Space Marines, who can tear open walls and shrug off frag missile hits, not the the pussy toned down version in 40k) four Librarians armed with daemon weapons, but the key thing is you have to justify everything to your "Games Master" (a third player who acts as a referee, creates the scenarios and generally lords over the other players) with background or "fluff". It's a welcome break from the noob powergamers and the like, but you've gotta find people with the right mindset - this isn't the place for someone who is ultra competitive. It's great for those who enjoy fun and cool games and making some awesome backstory and don't mind their characters losing the odd limb now and then. You can get the rulebook and a ton of articles on free from the Specialist Games website. |

I'm not really into it... I know people who are into it and have multi hundred dollar single pieces. It's like Sci/fi stratego. Not a spectator sport. It's really only fun for those playing. I do really like the art of which I see much of in this thread. I could see myself getting and painting some of the figures eventually. Probably not play though. Just because I have too many other expensive hobbies. I'm just not interested in starting another. |
Historical Wargamers . . . . . . Sci-Fi Wargamers . . . . . . Warhammer 40k Players . . . . . . Fantasy Wargamers/Miniatures Players . . . . . . Mainsteam Fantasy Miniatures Players (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc.) Risk isn't in the same category, but is just as "respectable" as historical wargaming. In fact, if you've never played Risk, you deserve a swift kick to the balls. Hitler never played Risk as a child. His invasion of Russia proves it. Seven extra guys at the start of every turn, but you could never hold on to the green ones. |

I picked up the Dawn of War computer game and liked it a lot. Now I've been going through some of the books. They're good little action novels - lots of action. I can't seem to make much sense of the order of the books though. It's like they're all written independent of each other. I doubt I'll get involved in the tabletop version. |

This thread got me to thinking about all the miniatures stacked somewhere in a closet. So I broke them out Sunday morning. Most were broken, figured I'd put them back together so I can throw them up on ebay. By the end of a one hour gluing session, I just wanted to play again, to see if it was still fun. Took them down to a local gaming store and absolutely DESTROYED a 1500pt Imperial Guard army. Was fun for an afternoon, but damn the guys in there smelled bad. Don't think I'll be back. But I got to smile at some overweight, pimpley kid and say, "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE THRONE OF KHORNE!"  Hey, it was cheaper than an afternoon of shooting and its ok to be a total geek once in awhile. |
I love west end games! I play the D6 version of star wars and paranoia. There is no better game to play with friends than paranoia. So much light hearted treachery and death all to appease The Computer. Do you have your mandatory happy on? |

Id heard of it but had no idea of its cost! Holy shit !! Thousands of dollars??I guess Im Have any of you players ever participated in a 3-gun or IDPA type match? A paintball match? Im not shitting on your hobby , just curious over the advantage of fun compared to say shooting games or paintball type games? And the board type play is preferable to online? (I do like the art though,and always liked building/painting model soldiers/tanks/arty etc.......I just dont do it anymore.) |
Who's to say you can't enjoy both? And if it's pissing rain outside, and you have a choice between soaking playing paintball or hanging around indoors with beer and pizza playing board games, is that really a choice?
Hell, yes. For two very important reasons. Firstly, and this is the important bit, it's a social event. Hang out with your buddies. Have a laugh. Let him show you the new rifle he bought. Chat about politics. Good, old-fashioned, human interaction between friends. Why have a Superbowl Party when you can just sit in front of your own TV? Secondly, and this is personal preference, board games provide you far greater amounts of flexibility. A computer game is limited to only what the programmer thought to put in. So yes, I get a lot more time playing Harpoon on the computer because it's a bastard to find real players, but on the other hand, the computer won't allow me to "Fire a warning shot into his bridge!" or ask the umpire to tune in to CNN to see the dirty great warship sitting off the coast which is shelling the local McDonald's. Sometimes a rule just makes no sense at all in certain situations, and as miniatures players you can just agree to ignore it. You do not have that option in an online computer game. NTM |
I used to play battletech via chatroom on AOL back in the day, didn't want to play with my friends because I didn't want them knowing how big a dork I was.... I got real into the storyline and editors, made a shit-ton of designs with fluff, they're still up on solaris7.com here Lars Corp BTW, Battle Value came out with BMR, before that it was CV. And does anybody still play on Megamek? Right now my internet sucks because I'm at Ft McCoy but once I get to Iraq I'll have better internet (irony), and it'd be cool to get a couple of games in to kill time between missions. |
