Good. While I can kinda sympathize with people who cannot otherwise afford wheels I am sick and fucking tired of assholes holding up traffic for miles while going 25-35 mph in a 55 or any other speed zone higher than their top speed. Thank you to those who pull over and let traffic pass but too many asshats refuse to let traffic pass. View Quote |

NJ is to gun control, as VA is to traffic laws. Pretty much. I can drive around with a loaded, suppressed machinegun in Virginia with a 100 round magazine in my car, but God help me if I drive 81/70. And your vehicle better have an up-to-date safety inspection sticker, emissions sticker, front and rear license plates with stickers, city property tax sticker, and a parking sticker. One of my friends was ticketed for failure to display front sticker in VA. While driving a Maryland-plated car. No matter how much he argued with the cop that MD does not issue front stickers, the cop wouldn't believe him or ask his sergeant or dispatch for assistance. I think he called the prosecutor's office and had it dismissed without having to drive down there for court, but I'm not 100% on that. Kharn |

Traffic enforcement in VA is what people think it is in New England.
81 mph on the MA pike...pffft. 81 in VA...one step below eating babies. |

They don't understand the traffic laws, don't understand English and don't have any insurance but there they are every morning fucking up traffic for those of us who actually pay personal property taxes, tag, title, inspection, emmisions, registration, county sticker and insurance in order for the privilege of using the roads we paid for. |

Actually, no. You need to have a valid DL to register it and once its registered it will require insurance which you will need a valid DL to get also. But as far as being a " Liquor Cycle " goes, its not that either. If you lose your license for any reason, you may not operate a motor vehicle on the road, any vehicle including a scooter. If you have a bicycle that has had the little gas motor kit installed then you ant operate that either without a license. This whole thread is pretty worthless. Reading through this thread, I am struck by the calls for more gov't regulation.

View Quote Loopholes will continue to be created until the states reword their laws to read anything that is under power by anything besides human legs . Gas, steam,solar,diesel,batteries,horses,hamsters....wont matter , cant operate it on public ROW if your license is suspended. My friends brother ran around on cruiser-type bicycles powered by tiny gas engines ....kinda like the kits you used to see advertised in the back of Boy's Life and Popular Mechanics , back in the day. He'd buzz right along at about 20-25 in the breakdown lane(level ground) and get back and forth to work and the beer store while his license was suspended for DUI. They were kinda neat . |

Does it come from the prohibition era and trying to catch boot leggers? (serious question) I also find it interesting, as anal as this state is about drivers laws, why it has taken so long to ban texting while driving. |

The highest posted limits we have are 70mph (mostly rural stretches of Interstates), so the thinnest "margin" we have is 11mph - 81 in a 70. The Code says you have to exceed 80mph, so you can go exactly 80 in a 70 (or 65) without violating the reckless by speed statute ... though there are a surprising number of cops who can't read a Code book and might try to ding you anyway at that speed. |

That is a huge deal. The VADGIF newsletter always has a big thing in it over the summer months about not drinking and boating. And I believe you can get a DUI on a horse here too. I've never seen the code though, just heard it from someone. |

In Michigan, the way the law is written, you can. Sorta. I used to work with a dunce of a guy who didn't give a shit about anything and had a felony record for repeated drunk driving arrests. While riding his liquorcycle he's been stopped a few times. In Lansing, MI, the judges interpret the law as scooters with engines below 50cc have no licensing requirement for adults. Down the road in East Lansing the judges will have none of that and you'll take the full hit for driving on a suspended license. In one city you're safe. In another you aren't. There is another avenue for drunks here in Michigan. You can mount a weedwhacker motor on a bicycle and it's classified as a Power Assisted Bicycle. No license, no insurance, no registration, and they can be ridden on sidewalks. |

I used to work at a motorcycle shop in Raleigh, NC. We sold about a half-dozen of these per month: http://halebicycles.com/merchant/841/images/site/lxmoped.jpg The funny bit is that there is a fairly substantial aftermarket parts business for these little bastards. Why? Because, in NC at least, mopeds had to have working pedals, no more than a 49cc two-stroke engine, and a fairly restrictive exhaust. It was common for folks to spend $700 on these things and immediately drop another $200 in 'upgrades'. Stock, mopeds top out at 20mph. With an aftermarket pipe and expansion chamber I've seen these little bastards hit 50mph. (Admittedly, that guy also had an 80cc kit.) Tomos is a good product. Throw a kit on it Knowing what I know about the brakes and build quality of these things, anything over 25mph is insane. m View Quote |
