Ah, I see all the old fudds showed up to the thread with their loaded to hell loads and complaints about gamers.

Guess what? Its a game. If shooting full power loads gets your rocks off then have at it. Doesn't sound like much fun to me, but you do you. One of the reasons I left is because there got to be more and more of you who got to bitching about "gamer loads" "shadow shooting" etc. Its a game- there are rules. I played the game within the rules and got damn good at it-but the old fogies didn't like that they couldn't win.

Costumes? Yeah, kind of silly, but you don't have to spends thousands of dollars on it. My sister won multiple world championships wearing ropers, jeans, button down shirt and a straw hat. Want to know why she doesn't shoot anymore? Because too many complaints that her costume wasn't "good" enough by old fudds. She has more patience than me though, she still shoots some of the state and regional matches.

I have to laugh at the guy that complained about the gamers not helping with the stages. In my 20 years of shooting CAS it was exactly the opposite. The gamers ran the stages. We were all RO certified, and can actually bend over to pick up brass and reset targets without getting winded. The most the old folks could do was spot, and then they bitched because they couldn't count the number of rounds because we shot too fast. Well turn your hearing aids up there gramps.

I'd also like to know where these money shoots are. Hell, if there was a chance of winning money I'd still be doing it. I was at all the major state and regional matches and never once won any money by placement. I got trophies and belt buckles and name recognition. I got a couple companies to give me discounts on guns and gear. That was it. I shot for the fun of it, I liked the speed, and I got tired of the complaining.

That's why CAS is dying. Too many old folks that can't just enjoy what they want to do, they have to shit on everything they don't like. I never once complained about not being able to see the stage because it was full of a cloud of black powder. But heaven forbid I run through the motions of the stage so my movements are precise and safe.

I still have many friends who continue to shoot. My local match is full of the nicest people you will ever meet. I occasionally go shoot a match there because I don't have to worry about all the drama llamas. If you show up in some semblance of western attire with ammo and no guns, I guarantee multiple people will hand you enough guns to shoot the entire match.

There you have it, I'm 30 years old and that is why my slicked up Vaqueros, short stroked 66 and Coyote Cap 97 will continue to sit in the safe, while the game dies. Y'all have fun and stay safe.

Reading many of these posts I detect a lot of people with no knowledge or love of American History.I know a couple guys who are in to cowboy shooting. True, it's an expensive hobby to get into, especially if you don't have any interest in western history. It's kind of like guys who will only go out for muzzle loading hunting if they can use modern breech loading black powder. As for cowboy shooting, (or reenacting) do it for the historical aspect Kids don't get into this sort of thing because they are simply ignorant of history, with no past and from the looks of things, no future. Sad really, but it's more about learning the sorts of things our ancestors did rather than tricking out a black rifle with every expensive trinket possible and seeing how many rounds you can dump down range. Once again, I cite the axiom that fits GD so well; "If you arn't part of the solution, you're part of the problem."

That is one way to look at it.

I have four reproduction black powder revolvers, newest is a '58 Remington which I also carry as a backup deer hunting with a incorrect RH cavalry flap holster (to protect from debris and weather)  I do not even own a smokeless pistol.

I love the history, I love the guns, I love the holsters... not really crazy about the nickname thing, dress up or non correct era cartridges with mousefart loads.

If I am going to compete with a SAA it will have a caliber starting with a 4 like Samuel Colt intended... because history.  And even then I would be tempted to go with something other than a SAA because in the old west not everybody had the latest and greatest pistol contrary to just about every western made.

I think a big part of the declining popularity is the sport is not attracting new/younger shooters, as had been said by other posters.  But I think the reason it is not attracting new shooters is the lack of "action" even though "action" is in the very title of the sport.

I used to be very big into USPSA & now I shoot IDPA (the USPSA arms race pushed me toward IDPA).  I went to a CAS match just to watch & get a feel for the sport.  I was expecting a USPSA type match, but with old "cowboy" type guns.  Shooting on the move, reloading under the clock, etc.  Running & gunning with cowboy guns.  It sounded like great fun.  But that is not what I saw at the match.  I went & watched another match, just to make sure.  It was the same.  Standing in one spot, shoot targets in a specific order with just enough rounds to empty the gun, no reloading, movement, etc. on the clock.

They forgot the action.

With so many actual action shooting sports available.  Why would someone looking to shoot action choose CAS?

The biggest thing is probably just sheer expense. The guns and gear (primarily holsters and such) aren't exactly cheap, and most aren't particularly suited to many other uses. Contrast with any of the "practical" shooting sports, where you can show up with your carry rig (for pistol comps), SHTF rifle (for rifle/multigen), or whatever and just run it. While you certainly can build gamer guns that don't have much other use, it's not a requirement for participation. And of course there are plenty of matches where you only need one gun. Contrast that with the CAS matches I normally see advertised, where you need four guns just to participate. Yes, while I'm sure you can get loaners as a new shooter, if you want to stick with it, it's a lot more investment than shooting IDPA SSP or USPSA Production. (Or even most multigun stuff.)

Second is probably the whole "costume" and nickname thing. Yeah, you don't have to do much, but it's still a requirement. Depending on the local crowd, may be seen as a bigger or smaller deal. If you've got a ton of die-hards trying to recruit new blood, it can be a real turn-off when people think they have to do the whole getup just to shoot.

Maybe I'm getting this confused with something else, but doesn't CAS/SASS actually have the opposite of power factors - that is, maximum allowable velocities? If I'm remembering correctly, when I looked through the rules for whatever it was, I realized that I do not have a single round of ammunition that would be legal for use in that sport, despite actually having revolvers (and at one time, rifles) that would otherwise be legal. That was yet another turnoff.
They made a couple of attempts to pass a regulation specifying a minimum load, but the screeching from the gamers drowned it out both times that I saw it come up.

He also liked being in a revolutionary war re-enactment group.

He dug the history, folklore, and military tradition.

He got old and died, though. I think that’s the answer you seek.  I have a couple of vaqueros and SAA repros to occasionally play with now.

The current generation of kids have a large representation in uniform overseas shooting jihadis instead of VC. Let’s see what hobbies they pursue when they’re middle aged...

You'll find a LOT of SASS members with the exact same complaint.  The sport has evolved over the years.  A lot of the action you mention has been removed because the average age of shooters has gone up.  As shooters get older they can't maneuver stages the way they used to.  It's a delicate balance trying to keep enough action to keep younger shooters interested but still allowing older shooters to fully participate.

SASS had a HUGE number of categories to choose from. (Too many in some people's opinion.) There are some that have caliber and/or propellant requirements.  But all fall under the same PF restrictions.

I understand your point but disagree that it's an actual problem.  If someone wants to shoot full power 45 Colt loads there's absolutely nothing stopping them.  That's what I shot when I started.  I've since switched to 38 Special because they're less expensive.  I still get my ass handed to me on a regular basis by a young kid shooting 45s.

Why on Earth would I or anyone else care what other people are shooting as long as they're within the rules.  What I see here is the same attitude of "You're not supposed to like what I don't like" attitude we see in GD a lot.  Why should the org change the game just because a few folks get but hurt over other folks playing within the rules?  "Waaaaaaahhhhh!  He's wearing a blue shirt.  I don't like blue shirts.  We need to make blue shirts illegal."

The point is to even the playing field.  Make it "Winchester white box only" for all I care.

Or introduce more discrete PF classes.

Or hand out ammo as a part of the range fee.

Or...

Or...

Or...

There has to be a dozen ways of solving this problem.  With varying merits.

It may not be a problem.  I'm only going off what folks have posted in this thread, and my own (brief) experience with it.

It's disheartening to be at a severe disadvantage due to equipment.  Losing constantly due to that, I'm sure gets old.

Maybe get rid of the clothing classes and introduce PF classes.

Also - WTF?  Classes based on the clothing worn?

@firedog51d

Thanks!

Personally, I see Steel Challenge as a bridge between CAS and 3gun/USPSA, and IDPA.

Steel Challenge is essentially the same sport as the handgun portion of CAS, but with the same fixed stages each match:  must ring the steel (non falling) in the shortest time.  Of course, it also includes divisions for modern handguns, and jacketed bullets are allowed.  However, there is no reason a CAS shooter couldn't participate with a cartridge SA revolver, and the Wild Bunch 1911 would be perfectly acceptable too in Steel Challenge.  Besides that, I'd bet most CAS shooters own a .22 pistol that would be right at home - even competitive - in Steel Challenge.

Going the other way, CAS advertises in USPSA's monthly magazine, and it's a great way to get in extra trigger time on steel (provided you have the equipment).

The idea should be to raise up both sports and increase participation in both.

Increasing participation means more active gun owners and more "gun culture" - which our opponents see as a target.  All shooting competion benefits us all.

I'm a 3 gunner(and USPSA). I would totally do Cowboy action shooting if someone gave me the guns, clothing and reloaded my ammo for me  , but I have over 10K in 3gun equipment and reload over 15K/rounds per year as it is so its just too much to deal with to add that sport.

I am sure every club is different ,but

about 20+ years ago I and a few of guys I shot IPSC with were invited to come shoot a CAS match
as some of the shooters shot IPSC with us on occasion and offered to let us use their stuff

The sheer amount of safety violations I saw there was appalling
tons of muzzle sweeps while holstering loaded pistols  , shooting steel when there were people setting up other stages further down the line , breaking 180

I/we very nicely mentioned that those things might be dangerous and were told we have been shooting longer than you have been alive and we know what were are doing .

then of course they mentioned that if we want to keep coming back we will need to keep improving our costumes with each match we attend

we didn't come back after lunch break

Exactly. Why does it matter what I shoot? *Most* stages still involve some sort of movement. I'm going to run the distance in 1/2 the time or less than it takes most to dodder their way over there, and I'm pulling four shotgun shells while I'm doing it. But yet I shouldn't be allowed to run light loads or practice beforehand? Its silly, the things they pick on. I'm highly competitive, I'm going to beat you one way or another, so why keep inventing rules to slow me down?

Then you shouldn't have a problem doing so with with WWB ammo.

....

Surely you see that reloading powder puff loads gives you a clear advantage - all else being equal?

I don't understand why this is even a debate.  Make different divisions that account for this mechanical difference and move on.  Why the push-back?

Funny, me trying to do something that gives me an advantage when I'm playing a game.

Give me any kind of ammo-but those aren't the stated rules. You can reload light loads just as easy as I can. Want to win? Play the game or have fun playing dress up.

Poll results are fairly even, kind of rare here.

From what I understand by the numbers CAS is still the #1 action shooting sport in this country.

I love to shoot and compete against others, I have competed in silhoutte, sporting clays, steel challenge, IDPA, USPSA, and 3 Gun. I like the latter the best because it incorporates skills I’ve learned in all the other sports, and tests them harder than anything else generally.

I understand the limitations on moving and shooting with antique (or antique design) guns, I know my Glock will not go off I drop it if I trip or fall while running, I don’t have that confidence with a SAA style revolver. Decocking on the clock any gun that requires a trigger pull for the decocking would be a ND waiting to happen.

I think SASS should also partner with the video game outfits doing things like RDR2, I know people aged 45 to 10 that play games like that and would love to do it in real life, maybe have some good stage designers help the developers make a few practice levels that contain real CAS shooting stages? If you make it in a certain amount of time you get an invite to shoot a match and a coupon for discounted cowboy ammo from Cabelas.

I can deal with the wimpy ammo and the clothes, but like I said in a previous post the guns get expensive quickly.

If someone left a brace of Vaqueros or Uberti SAAs, a worked over 1873, a
12 ga coach gun, and some .44 dies outside my door I’d find the money for some clothes and a hat, and this 31 yr old would shoot CAS.

SASS Categories (paraphrased from their current handbook):

"SASS recognizes shooting categories based upon age, gender, costuming, equipment, shooting style, and/or propellent."

"All SASS categories may be subdivided by gender to establish categories for ladies.  There are no men's categories"

"Each category has a set of standard regulateions the competitor must follow in order to 'stay in category' during the match."

Open Age categories - use any main match revolver.  revolver may be shot in any SASS legal shooting style except Gunfighter.  May use any SASS legal main match shotgun, rifle, and SASS legal ammo.

Age Based categories: Same rules as open but broken down to
buckaroo/buckarette - 13 and under
Junior Boy/Girl - 16 and under
Wrangler/Lady Wrangler - 36 and up
49er/Lady 49er - 49 and up
Senior/Lady Senior - 60 and up
Elder Statesman/Grand Dame - 70 and up
Cattle Baron/Baronness - 75 and up
El Patron - 80 and up

Shoting Style Categories:
Duelist Style
Gunfighter Style

Costume Categories:
Classic Cowboy
B-Western

Blackpowder shooting categories:
frontier cartridge
frontiersman

"all SASS recognized shooting categories may be offered by subdividing by all factors; including age, gender, shooting style, and propellent."

So basically you can break down all the categories into subcategories based upon the factors.

If the categories are any inclination, its a persons age that's killing CAS.  There are 5 age based categories for 49+.  Which means there's even more than that if you factor in age + the other categories (shooting style, costume, BP shooting).

The funny thing is that everyone keeps mentioning other eras and genres of shooting sports they would do.

I think it would be fun, but nowhere near fun enough for me to dress up like a cowboy and drop a ton of money on guns that I wouldn't buy or shoot otherwise. Miami Vice? Hell yeah! 70's cop shows/Blaxploitation/action movies? Sign me up!

The cowboy thing isn't what I grew up on. There's no nostalgia for me there. Seems like that's a large part of it's appeal for many participants.

Well yeah, that's the idea.  It is a competition after all. Do you intentionally put yourself at a disadvantage during competitions?

The push back is because there's absolutely no reason for it.  You don't like powder puff loads? Don't shoot them. Shoot whatever you want. If a stupid belt buckle is so important to you that you just HAVE to win, then use whatever equipment gives you the best opportunity to do that.  But don't suggest rules that punish other shooters simply because you don't like their choice of equipment.

This is like...  100 percent backwards.  The "shooters being punished" are the ones who don't reload, and purchase normal off the shelf stuff.

Games are only fun when everyone is on a reasonably equal playing field.  Shooter A shooting powder puff loads, vs shooter b shooting full power loads, being forced to compete directly against one another is not a reasonably equal playing field.

We don't allow amputees to compete with "whole" athletes either, because artificial legs creates an un-equal playing field.

Ditch some of those divisions based on the clothing you're wearing, and create divisions based on real meaningful differences that have an effect on the competition.  Every other shooting sport does it, why not this one?

No one is taking your powder puff loads away.  Just setting it up so that you're competing against other powder puff loads.  How is that unreasonable or unfair?  Or...  a punishment to you?

Shoulder Rigs are known to flag folks. The only way it could be done if is you had to load once your weapon was pointed down range. Drawing from a shoulder rig lasers a shit ton of folks standing behind.

Most targets will be steel and can be engaged with either gun.  Paper has to be engaged with the revolver or slug, can be neutralized with one “A” zone hit.

There will be reloading, but the intent is to keep it to a minimum, I want a shooting contest, not a loading contest.

Hi Folks,

I only read the first page. Wow! The disrespect for another shooting sport saddened me.  On FB, I have read posts that also showed disdain for Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS). It makes me very sad that, in the current political climate of hatred for gun owners, we aren't unified in our love of shooting sports and respect for the Second Amendment.

CAS is the first shooting sport I've participated in. One of several reasons was that I love the costumes. I've made many of my own costumes and even shot in a bustle. Two of my dearest friends were even the NRA's Women of the Year. Both shoot in fabulous costumes.

I now participate in Wild Bunch Action Shooting. We still wear costumes. However, instead of shooting Single Action Army Revolvers, we shoot 1911 pistols.

I could go on and on about my love for these guns and sports. However, the point I want to make would be lost. We need to support any and all shooting sports, whether we participate in them or not.

Thank you to anyone who read this post.

Sincerely,

Allie Mo (my "dumb" alias)

the proliferation of handloading rounds so weak to remain competitive makes a mockery of the origins of shooting in this sport. When you can see the round, and tracks it's arc when shooting a target 15-50' away, it becomes a joke.

Now you're making shit up.  Took me about 10 seconds to find readily available factory loads. 125 grain lead 38 Special

"Every other shooting sport does it, why not this one?"  If I remember correctly SASS has a higher membership that any other shooting sport.  Maybe it's the rest of them that are wrong.

And where exactly do you draw the line when it comes to competitive advantage?  You obviously think we should all be required to use the same ammo.  What about guns?  I shoot a pair of Vaqueros.  Should I not have been allowed to put lighter springs in them because I now have a competitive advantage?  What about my shotgun?  Should I not have been allowed to smooth out the chambers for ease of extracting spent hulls because I now have a competitive advantage?  What about my rifle?  Should I not have been allowed to hone the internals to make the action smoother because I now have a competitive advantage?  Hell, let's take it a step further.  Should I not be allowed to practice because that gives me a competitive advantage? It's a game. People play to win. If some folks don't want to do that fine.  Why should an entire sport have to change just because a few can't stand that others play it differently than they do?
