Overbrook Asylum is literally in my back yard (Verona NJ). Only have been there a hand full of times and all I can say is it is creepy as hell. In 2009 they have started tearing it down but however stopped the project when it came to the main building. Numerous demolition crews have left the project and never returned. This place was featured in a few Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventurers episodes as well as the movie choke.

Asbestos and lead paint. I grew up not too far from Greystone. It sparked an interest in the Kirkbride buildings in general.

Waverly hills Sanatorium. Started as a TB hospital then after tens of thousands died here and the TB epidemic was under control, it was repurposed into a mental health and geriatric facility. |
I grew up near Rockland State Psychiatric in New York. It is a huge campus with over a dozen buildings, some which used to be a TB asylum. Most are abandoned, some are still used. Scariest place I've ever been. We sometimes would poke around the old buildings when I was an EMT and we had a satellite HQ on the grounds. I am positive I've seen a ghost here.

All I can say is I will never enter this building again since the last time I went. Go on... If I must. This building has numerous underground tunnels which are about 5ft high (need to crouch to walk though) which connect all the other satellite buildings. I decided this one day I would venture into the tunnels and see where it would take me. I brought florescent yellow spray paint with me to mark the way since it is very easy to get lost and get stuck over night in there. I proceeded to enter the main building through the broken glass window by the reception desk, and then proceed to the Medical Ward since the entrance to the tunnels was in there. Upon going to the Medical Ward I decided to stop for some odd reason and listen around. I thought I heard voices talking in a conversation but just shrugged it off as its an old building making noises. I proceeded down the stairway and entered the tunnels marked every 10-15 ft with a dot on the wall to show the wall I went. About 45 min of crouching through the tunnels I came to an area where I can stand up and rest my back. I rested for about 10-15 min since my back was on fire. At this time my flashlight started to get dimmer and dimmer. I was going through my mind "Oh shit, just great." I unscrewed the back of my mag light replaced the batteries by feel in the dark and turned my light back on. The first thing I noticed the paint I put on the wall was nearly gone, almost looked wiped away. Now I am thinking "GREAT!" I must of forgotten to shake the can and mix it up. I sprayed some on the wall and it was bright..... Now I have no clue which direction I took so I attempted to backtrack. I did the best I could and found a stairway leading up. Before I proceeded up the stairs something caught my attention and I looked to my right on the wall. Spray painted on the wall in red paint was the words "HELL" with an arrow pointing up. Now I am thinking "Great just freaking great." I proceeded up the stairs and come to realize I entered into the morgue and have NO CLUE where the heck I am in the building. Right in front of me is a freezer with 4 stalls and all of the racks are in the open position. At this point I get a very uneasy feeling around me and decide to just find a way out. I proceed out of the morgue and have two choices, UP more stairs or back DOWN into the tunnels. I decided to go UP to see if I can find a way out. At the top of the stairs I am in the PSYCH WARD. I walk slowly through broken glass, empty padded rooms, and disturbing paintings on the walls. I decided for some odd reason I would enter one room and look out of a window that had iron bars on it to see if I can get a point of location. Upon peering out the window I catch a reflection of a face behind me and turn around to find NOTHING! I am completely freaked out at this point and proceed to aimlessly walk fast through hallways. Upon a dead end I can hear a faint maniacal laugh. I start sweating bullets and walk down more hallways to find an “EXIT” sign. Once I found this sign I breathed a sigh of relief and calmed down a little. Proceeded toward the exit to only find a steel door locked with a pad lock and chain. Now I have two choices, go back the way I came or find a way another way out. I walked down some more hallways and find the recreation area which has metal lattice on the broken windows. No way out of here. So on I go through the entire building to find the damn exit. I pass a few bariatric chambers with pink tile on the wall. I open a door and come to a large open room. It is the PEDIATRIC WARD. There are little kids paintings all over the wall. Just a typical hospital setting you can imagine for a pediatric ward. I see another EXIT sign and proceed to follow it. I stop for some odd reason just before the door and listen to my surroundings. I hear a very faint little kid talking and turn around. I start to walk towards to door more and more and there are three steps down to it. I see that it is LOCKED! However it is a flimsy storm door. I think I can break through. About 2 steps down I feel uneasy and turn around and look down the hallway again. In a split second I see a small shadow go from one room to another real real fast. I am thinking HOLY SHIT! I kicked the door numerous times and it finally gives. I run out as fast as I could and never looked back. Waiting for the TLDR meme now... Below is a link for more pictures from within. Actually the one thing that is commonly felt that my cousin and I can agree on is the heaviness of the atmosphere. When I initially entered I had feelings of excitement of exploring and seeing what really was in this building. As time went on in the building my emotions changes (when entering the morgue). After entering the morgue I started to experience feelings of depressions as in being dragged down and bummed out. These morphed into feelings of anger which then turned to dread and sheer terror before leaving. Not to mention the entire time you have the feeling of someone watching you constantly with malicious intent. This is one of the exit signs I decided to follow in the story i posted above: Dumb move looking back

When USPHS closed it hospitals because bleeding hearts complained of mistreatment of patients, the BOP took them as inmates when they messed up in society. Only difference now is that they arent receiving the treatment they should be receiving, and are major contributors to prison violence. |

| Also it seems like all these cool, creepy old buildings are up in the North. The only "abandoned and haunted" places to explore around here are mills, graveyards, and the odd abandoned factory/warehouse with the "haunted by the specter of the dude who died in some gruesome and exaggerated way" stories. |

When i was in college we use to sneak around old Bryce outside Tuscaloosa.. If you came down the front road shown here the blind school down the road would call the cops....you could come from the back by driving down an old trail with mud holes and crossing the railroad. It was creepy as hell. After they shut it down, they built a new one by campus A guy got loose one time and held some students hostage...good times

We used to explore the old Jefferson Davis hospital here in Houston. The place was just a hospital but has a storied history. The upper floors were the mental ward. The craziest thing was that EVERYTHING was still in there. Like they just stopped showing up to work one day. I mean everything; patient files, beds, equipment, straight jackets, phones, beds, NOTHING was removed. We used to dare each other to lay in the morgue freezers.
We got arrested (as juvies) for being in there. The judge laughed and dropped the charges and said the state should have locked the doors. I think it's now a subsidized housing "loft" complex. Same building, just remodeled.

There was one by my grandmother's house that was closed in the 1980s and was only demolished in 1999. It was called Sunland, and was a part of a chain of hospitals throughout Florida. In 1997, a teenager exploring the 'ruins' with his friends accidentally walked into an open elevator shaft and was impaled by the equipment at the bottom, which makes it even creepier than it was when it was operating. There are still outbuildings remaining, and ghost hunter types say that you can still experience "paranormal activity" in the playground built over where the main building used to be.

So what's your theory on what happened with the paint? Do you think it was explainable -- unshaken can, too much crap on the walls to see it, too far away when you sprayed, etc? I would imagine the feelings you mentioned would come from the panic of getting lost all of a sudden. |
