Their newly revised policy is that they will only give up the master code in response to a subpoena.

Meaning they will continue to install a back door into each safe with an electronic lockset, and will continue to retain combinations to mechanical lock sets.

The obvious answer is (A) don't buy Liberty safes (B) if you have one with a mechanical lock set change the combination (C) if you have one with an electronic lock set change it over to mechanical an change the combination

Operative word being "A". A court order. A court order for what? A court order to search Mr. Hughes property. There was no court order for Liberty to surrender any info. That was completely voluntary because they were asked nicely.

But if they didn't they would either crack it open or just cut through the side.

The outcome would be liberty being compelled by the state to act.  And they can fight that state action as being unreasonable or oppressive.  They actually have 15 days to formulate their response, and it’ll take the court weeks to hold a hearing and rule.

During that time the subject of the search warrant can file for the preservation of the safe, thus denying the Feds from cutting it.

You know.

Due process.  For everyone involved.

Kind of important.

Or not.

There's a huge amount of folks on the right that refuse to understand that their country's government, big business of their hobbies, and pretty much every other bad thing is directly targeting, is happening and it's growing worse.

They're no different than some deluded Democrat screaming that Joe Biden's the best president ever and the country is better than it ever has.

I can just imagine them, sitting around their table in the morning at McDonalds, talking about how well no this time, "Good" rank and file FBI agents were on it, and everybody's making a big deal out of it because the FBI is actually really good and this guy was probably a criminal anyway, adding in that these salt weapon bans won't take their darr raffle so it's only going to affect the criminals.

What's extra funny about this, and deliciously ironic, is that YOU don't understand how warrants work. The warrant did not involve liberty in any way. Warrants are between the government and the target, not 3rd parties. The government would need a subpoena to compel them to provide the codes, and they could still say no and realistically nothing would happen. The FBI would just have to hire a lock smith. Don't talk about "retards" when you are one yourself.

This.
If Liberty stood on their legal rights in their desire to protect their customers, it would have been faster to break into the safe than to get a subpoena to serve on Liberty.
It wouldn't have changed anything as far as the customer was concerned, except maybe damaging the safe, but it would have shown that Liberty doesn't voluntarily help anybody break into a safe against a customer's wishes.

I don't know if it's been stated previously but I think the major area of heartburn is they've told customers and locksmiths for years they have no master combination and there was no way to get into the safe if the combo was lost.  Conveniently the FBI waves their sweaty dong in front of Liberty and voila we have master codes for every safe here you go sir.  I believe they just lost alot of their consumer base.

Glad I read this because the grandson just exited from the Army and got married also.  A Liberty safe is what I have ordered at TSC and was supposed to pick it up Saturday for a wedding gift.  Soon as I get off this forum will do my part and cancel the order.  A friend just built a storm bunker and in it he built a safe from hell.  It is made out of some special steel and you have to reach through a hole to spin the dial, he has several layers of that material and it was welded in place.  It is huge and cemented to the ground.  A man gotta know what he is doing because the lock chamber has several procedures he has to perform blind before opening with some ancient harmful tricks.  He said that nobody had the combo and if he died so be it.  I also asked do you have anything illegal and already knew the answer because he is in his 60's and never been married or any minor scrape with the law.  By the way he is a master blacksmith and welder.

Or:

1) contact liberty to get the master code (which people here have done before when the somehow screwed up changing their user-level code) and then use that master code to reset it to something liberty doesn't know, or

2) open the safe, pull the door panel, disconnect the keypad from the power source, push the reset button, and then follow the lock's documented procedure to reinitialize it, with a master code you choose.

The electronic locks on the safes have a "master code".
I had a safe with that electronic lock. Had problems with it. They have a pretty good failure rate. Easiest fix, get a combination lock. If the safe is new, Liberty would have the combination in their files. Get a locksmith to change the combination, dont tell Liberty. Lol.

I currently own a Liberty safe with a dial lock. Bought it new 5 years ago. I have a " key " and instructions how to change the numbers. I'll be changing it this weekend.
Or calling a locksmith to change the entire dial assembly out for a better one.

Sounds like the keyless entry on my old Taurus.
There was a procedure to program or reprogram a personal door code, plus there was a permanent code.
The permanent code was printed on a sticker on a trunk hinge. The previous owner had no idea how to use the keyless entry, it had remote and keyless so she only used the remote (me too, but I memorized the code so I could get in it without going back to the house for the remote).

As mentioned, the Feds are going to get in your safe one way or another.  I don’t think they care too much how much damage they cause.

What was dumb on Liberty’s part is not demanding a court order and not making it clear to customers they had combinations, opt out etc.

If a customer is locked out they don’t give you the code, they make you hire a locksmith and then give him the code.

Oh they would if they could, but they can't.  Apple's security was designed to not have a back-door, because that is by definition not secure.

By the same token you can reset the admin codes on the S&G lock that Liberty puts on their safes.  Of course that's not going to keep a LE agency with a warrant out of your safe for more than about 30 minutes anyway.
