A thin cutting disk on a grinder will go through steel that will strip the teeth off of any recip. saw blade in two seconds.

If you use Harbor Freight blades.
Have cut plenty of stock with my Milwaukee sawzall and their "the torch" blades.

Long cuts on thin metal.... Jigsaw
Long cuts on thicker metal.... Plasma cutter
Short, straight cuts on thick metal.... Sawzall
Short, curved or odd angle cuts in thick metal.... Plasma and/or grinder

Right tool for the right job

Mines also a Porter Cable.  It comes with two different guards and a reversible nut.  I should probably go buy a face shield & wear a cup when using it.

Face shield.  Frags to the area between the upper lip and nose hurt really bad .  Eyepro under the face shield, ALWAYS.

It is about the grip positions which don't allow for proper control of the blades.  But it can be done.

Does it say that on the wheel or the grinder itself?  Grinding wheels will say "no cutting," and cutting wheels will say "no grinding."

Unless you have a wheel that can do both

Those work pretty well but the cuts are slow because of the thickness.

On a lot of the angle grinders the cutting wheels don't get enough mounting support and they break apart. I do it all the time, but (as with a proper cut off wheel set up) you always have to be ready for that cutting wheel to go ballistic ... wear eye and face protection!

Seriously, wear eye protection at a minimum.  A face shield is also good insurance.  When a cutting or grinding wheel breaks, you get fragments that can penetrate walls when you are using a very high speed angle grinder.  PPE is critical.  Cutting wheels are more likely to break than grinding wheels.  If  you have a sawz-all, it's often a better choice for cutting.  Even a hacksaw can often get the job done cleanly and safer.

I don't know if it's been said yet,but when you're using a cutoff wheel on a angle grinder, don't set the grinder down on the cutoff wheel itself. They will warp slightly which is a big factor in why they grenade.

Be sure to match the RPM of the grinder with the RPM of the cut off wheel. Do not exceed the design limit of the cut off wheel.

Eypro, face shield, earpro.

One thing people overlook is ear protection, if for nothing else keeping shit out of your ears.  Normally if I'm cutting and grinding, I'm also welding, all three things that can put hot metal in your ears and potentially fuck your shit up.

For lots of steel fabrication a grinder with a cutoff wheel is a far better way to cut.

I use 4" angle grinders, take the guard off and use a 6" disc. You have to be careful it doesn't get away from you but it works well. From a professional standpoint, if you're cutting anything other than wood a sawzall is a time waster.

EDIT - Make damn sure you hold on well and brace yourself when you can. I've had grinders bind up and try to get away from me. I hold them so tight that it will stop/burn up the motor or break the gears inside before it would come out of my hands and hurt me. I've ruined a number of grinders that way but after using hundreds if not thousands of 6" cutoff wheels i've never been even close to getting hurt and only had one wheel shatter. My hand and eye protection blocked it though.

Every grinder cutoff wheel accident i've seen (about 10) was from someone cutting the wrong way, binding the wheel by being an idiot or having it catch a bit and then basically letting it go because they are afraid of it.

This man knows.

Like any tool, knowing how to use it makes a difference.

As they say, hot coffee is hot.

Cutting wheels are for cutting. Like the Honey bear,Badger, they dont give a shit.

Dont let it get you.

Its all in how you hold it, the angle of the body, and where the loads are going WHEN it binds up.

ETA typo

What commonly causes wheels to blow up is previous damage.

Rarely does a brand new wheel blow up on the first jam. Usually, the wheel has been jammed beforehand, or got twisted in the cut, wearing the face and back of the disc, damaging the reinforcement. The worst damage comes from dropping a grinder - like peanut butter on toast, they always land on the wheel, sometimes cracking it. Of course, nobody on arfcom would drop a grinder.

Bottom line, every time you pick up a grinder, have a look at the disc, both cutting and grinding wheels. If it is not perfect, change it. They cost a lot less that a visit to the ER.

Grinder-related injuries are nasty.  Don't use a tool for something it aint meant for, and leave the damn guard on!
