Our country has the balls to take a position and stick with it, good, bad, or otherwise. While they are trying to out bid each other to see who can appease our enemies more, we are solving the worlds problems. We are simply on a different page. I think it is because we understand the problem and they (EU nations) have their heads in the sand.

Basically, the average American has no idea what happens outside of the US news (which is entirely US-centric). Whereas other countries tend to focus more globally. This is a generalization of course, but that's more or less what people see. People of other countries interpret this as arrogrance when it's more like ignorance.

jellousy, think about it in a sport sense,
before the patriots won a few super bowls, nobody hated them, when the Miami Huricans were losing no body hated them when the yankees are doing well everybody cheers against them when Notre dame was fighting to produce 500 seasons nobody cared take notre dame for example, even though, they recruit kids who can spell words more complex then their names, speek english opposed to ebonics, manage to not have any players arrested for rape, robbery or assualt, and graduate most of their athelets, everybody hates them, so even though they are exactly doing what a university is supposed to be doing, their past success still drives people to hate them even though they havent done anything significant recently Same thing with the USA so basically F' EM they are onot going to like us regardless of what we do, so the next time a foriegner has anything negitive to say about the US, say well your here now, and if its soo bad, take your ass back home to your motherland |

Back in high school like 15 years ago, the many Spanish kids wh went to school with us (their parents were stationed in Anchorage) called Americans arrogant too. They also said we weren't as great today as we used to be and our best days were behind us. This was back around 1990-1991 when the Japanese were kicking ass and the US had a mild recession. |

Its hard to exaggerate ones own worth when you have the largest and most sucessfull economy in the world, help the most people with foreign aid then any other country, own the world in music, movies, and MP3 players. In a lot of places, people don't look others directly in the eye when walking the street or even when conversing. It's a cultural thing. Walk down the street in Manhattan sometime and you will see the same thing. |

I had a crush on a South African exchange student in high school. At a dance we were all chatting, and of course Apartheid came up. Ever the contrarian and wanting to score points with her, I said Apartheid was cool  Everyone basically walked away from me liked I farted really badly. In a way I did.

That is another thing I've noticed, paying attention to foreign media. They really, really want to believe that we are not that powerful anymore. They want us to fail at everything. Some of the BBC coverage of the Iraq conflict is particularly egregious; they seem to relish video of injured or dead US military personnel

Arrogant is not does not equate to self confidaence, doing abetter job, being independent, or if we can kick someones ass....

Marked by or arising from a feeling or assumption of one's superiority toward others: an arrogant contempt for the weak. These are not in any way a good quality to have. You can have pride in doing a good job, standing for what is right in the world, have self confidence, be happy you have indoor plumbing, etc. From this thread it exemplifies that most Americans don't know the differance. Many of us where raised to have good self esteem reguardless of weather we earned the right to be proud of what we have done. This "self-esteem" to many comes across as arrogance and rightfully so. |

Before you read this please note: I am pro-American and am just trying to explain the attitudes of others. This post is for educational purposes only!
That's part of it, so is overbearing self confidence, and so is jelousy. The US absorbs alot of the world's resources, is amazingly rich, and unchallengably powerful. That breeds resentment, especially if you are on the wrong end of that power and wealth. Sometimes all some parts of the world see of America are rapacious companies or occupying troops. US companies prop up tin pot oppressive dictators, strip natural resources from local tribes without just compensation and a whole bunch of other nasty things. However, so do other country's companies. So essentially: 1) The US is the biggest, most successful target 2) The average American is ignorant of the outside world. I could say the same about the average Australian too, for the same reasons. 3) The US is the wealthiest and most powerful nation on Earth. See point 1 4) The US uses that power and wealth in its own self interest, often to the detriment of other peoples 5) The US absorbs a large percentage of the world's resources, pollutes the most and is perceived to be getting rich off the backs of other nations 6) The US props up (or is blamed for propping up) tin-pot third world dictators to serve its own ends, then waxes lyrical about democracy and human rights 7) Whilst other nations do this stuff too, the US is the most obvious perpetrator (see point 1) Alot of the above is unfair, misdirected, envious, etc. Alot is justified. It all depends on the circumstances. Loud, boorish American tourists and ex-pats don't help matters (see point 2). If Botswana was the biggest nation on the block, the same complaints would be leveled against them. The rich and powerful often act in ways that upset and damage the less rich & powerful out of both selfish and unselfish motives. The less rich & powerful resent the power and wealth of others. There's fault on both sides. |

I think everything you said was completely fair, valid, and true. About the resource use, though, something should be realized. A real cheap point is made that even thought there are 300m Americans (5% ofthe global population), we consume 25% of the resources, at least. No consideration is made of what we do with those resources. We're very efficient and productive with them. As for propping up amenable dictators, we get a lot more crap for getting rid of easily accomodated a-holes like Saddam! |
