I guess I kinda get the nostalgic aspect of it (these were a staple of my childhood), but...yeah. The real thing is better.

My thoughts as well. My dad grew up in Mexico City, and mom in rural NC. We ate every variety of "Mexican" cuisine from street food to whitey. I love them all.

I honestly have never had a taco I didn't like.
Whether it was the Old El Paso "Taco kit" ones my Mom made or some trendy taco bar in some city or ones I have thrown together
with leftovers and seasoning. Tacos and Pizza are the ideal foods, yet oddly, it seems impossible to fuck up tacos, unlike pizza. Go figure.

Just as a heads-up, don't read that and try to ask for chingaderas in a Mexican restaurant.

Whitey Taco Pro Tip

Spice Hunter Spicy Taco mix from  Vitacost (organic even!) or see spicehunter.com

Old El Paso taco shells - crunchy

85/15 ground beef at least - 80/20 even better

Kraft American Deluxe slices - no individual wrap crap - 1/3rd slice before the meat goes in (you will thank me later) top with favorite shredded cheddar, lettuce and tomatoes

Don Julio Blanco margaritas while prepping, then ice cold beer with the meal

That is all.

Nooooo....

I mean "old school" suburban, midwestern American tacos, like your mom used to make in the 70's and 80's out of ground beef, with the hard yellow-corn taco shells.

Tacos, mutherfucker!

Well if you do, may I strongly recommend Pace's Taco Cooking Sauce.  That shit is killer, man.  Beats the fuck out of the taco "kits" you see at the grocery store, Old El Paso or whatever.

Just brown a pound of ground beef, drain, add a cup of the Pace, and simmer.  Dice your maters, shred your lettuce, and warm your shells while simmering.

Dee-licious!

Didn't have time for Jack and the Box tacos on the way to work, so I snuck out after I got it here and picked up some Taco Casa. Crunchy taco, soft taco and a bean burrito.

You bet.  We have them about once a week.

Quick and easy, and it's homegrown tomato time.

A "softshell taco" is a damn burrito.

Unless you quickly pan-fry corn tortillas in a little oil, so they're soft, and wrap everything up in that.  But those are probably called enchigatos or some damn thing.

Food varies a lot across Mexico, so there are no rules about what is required on it to be considered a taco. But the vast majority of Mexico uses a soft corn tortilla for tacos (along with most good Mexican restaurants in the States).  It's not a fucking burrito.  They also use white cheeses (if it even has cheese), not cheddar.

ALL TACOS MATTER

I loved taco night when I was a kid.  I would have eaten them every night.  Would now too.

Those aren't tacos. Those are "renditions" of tacos. Ever buy a hamburger in France? They're not hamburgers.

Yes, you are wrong.  Only the hard shelled taco was an American creation.

I live three miles from the best taco place in Detroit.

No crunchy shells. No ground beef.

Been there with lots of people who have spent time in non resort Mexico and it's the best you can get around here.

Crunchy tacos are a huge fail.

You can still get them at Del Taco.

This Tito's Taco place is not bad at all for old school tacos.

I'll use ground beef, venison, or even turkey.  Shredded chicken is awesome.  Along with the seasonings, I'll add diced tomatoes with chiles to the meat, and cooked and drained black beans.  Then we add the cold toppings to our individual tacos.

Not a lick of latin blood in me, but our family never gets tired of tacos.

I'm going on 3 days straight.    Goes a long way when you live alone.

By the 3rd day though, it's time to smash it all up and call it taco salad, just to pretend you have some variety in your diet.

Not only do I eat them weekly at a minimum, I will take it one step further.

A chicken taco is not a "taco".

Nor is soft tacos, fish, shimp, dog shit, or anything else you choose to put in there.

A taco is exactly what you described OP.

Ground beef, cheese, lettuce, sauce, on a hard shell. Tomatoes too if you have some.

Anything else is just a bastardization of a perfect and majestic delicacy.

Well, a snowflake trolls a taco thread.

A fucking taco thread.  I made pulled fucking pork tacos last weekend.  Traditional fucking tacos.

Those new hard shell store bought tacos with a flat bottom are neat to use once in a while.  Hamburger and taco seasoning is fucking appropriate for them.

While I prefer street tacos, I do have to get my crispy taco fix at Tito's Tacos in Culver City a few times a year.
