Man if I knew then what I know now.

In the late 80s, the owner of a shop owed me a favor and offered me one in perfect condition for $400.  I passed.

I still wish I had bought it.

Bought a Ruger Mini in 84 or 85 for $300 and just couoldn't go that $430 fro a new Colt H-bar Ar. Hell if I had stayed out of the bars for a month I would have had enough for the Colt at the next show.

I saw a Marlin 30-30 for about $150 at the Frisco show last month. It looked like hell......like it had been in a gun rug under a bed for about 20 years. Wishe now I had picked it up anyway.

Winchester Model 21 double barrel shotgun.  Back in 72 I had a chance to to buy a LNIB 12 ga.  for $550 from a guy who was selling off his grandfather's estate.  I couldn't make up my mind and told him I had to think about it overnight.  I came back the next day with cash in hand and it had already been sold to a guy for $575.

Ouch.

a HK940 I saw at a gun show.  The guy selling it brought it in, wanting to sell it to one of the people with a section at the show, and didnt know how much it was worth, or what it really was.  I didnt have enough cash there, but I would have offered him a lot more than what he sold it to that dealer for.  The rifle was in like-new condition, but he sold it to the dealer for $450

M1A Standard with scope (I forget what kind, but it was pretty goood) in a package at the Harrisburg Gun Show three years back.

$800.

I was looking at a pistol or HK USC (eventually bought a USP). So I passed on it.

My local gun store owner called me "an idiot".

Same gunstore owner said he could probably find me a USC for around that. I also passed. I could have a UMP conversion by now.

A guy was walking around the gun show a few years ago with a pre ban daewoo with a folding stock and whatever else.  Don't know much about them (besides the fact  I know they are rare).

He wanted $400 for it and I just didn't have the cash or could get him to trade.

Did pass up on a Hesse AR15 for $1000 though.

True Story:

In 1994 I wanted an AR15 really, really badly. I was dead broke, but I had credit.. Rifles were still really expensive because prices hadn't stabilized as the ban had just started. I came across a 20" Bushy HBAR in the Shotgun News and the seller was about 20 minutes away. Price was $1400 with 10 mags and 1,000 rounds. Gun had 60 rounds through it. Made arrangements to go over that night.

So I show up at this guys property and go into his pole barn as instructed. There's a lot of strange looking animals in cages that I couldn't identify (he told me, but I forget). I hear him call from the upstairs to "Come on up"so I make my way to the lighted stairs and cross a subgun (SW76, didn't know what it was at the time) along the way. I was scared shitless... The whole caged animals, gun laying around, I was ready to leave before I saw him. He met me at the top of the stairs and shook hands and we walked around the corner. I couldn't believe what I saw.. It was lavishly furnished, all kinds of exotic game trophies on the wall, and STACKS of gun cases in one corner of the room. We exchange pleasantries and he explains the situation. He's a restuarantuer, and is getting divroced. He wants to sell his guns so that the wife doesn't get the money. Apparently the guy is a total gun whore and has done a lot of African safaris, total playboy, but married a woman who became a totally different person after they got married.

So we stitch up the deal for the AR and he asks if I might be interested in an SR-25? A what? It's a .308cal AR sniping rifle, I've even got the Leupold scope for it.. it's over here.." My black-rifle-Fu was weak at the time, but I could tell that it was a special gun by looking at the weapon, case, and accessories.

"I'll let you have it for $4K"
"Man, I wish I could-I'm having to do the AR on credit as it is.."
"How about payments-$100 a month?"
"Ahh, I don't know,..You would take payments on a $4k rifle from a stranger?"
"I know where you live!" (he asked for my DL when taking care of the AR)
"Man, I'd like to but I just don't think I can."

I shit you not....

Went into Bangers warehouse to pick up a order for a local gun store I was working part-time for.
Its about 1987-88 range , before the inport ban.
They were the inporter for the FN-FNC and had them stacked to the ceiling , dealer price at the time $335.00 , all you wanted.
And I had a "hobby" FFL at the time.

That gives me chest pains, my dad constantly says how much he wishes he would have bought MG when they were cheaper and it was easier to do. I am too young to have done so, but almost anytime I see him and we talk guns he curses himself for not doing it.

Forgot to add mine, M-1 carbine for $150. Not sure which manufacturer, but it was pretty good condition. Was a neighbor of mine who did not know what it was, it was his father's and probably a bring back or gotten after the war. I could not do it, told him to keep it in the family where it belongs. Part of me says I did the right thing, part of me says "your a dumbass". More so the latter, because he probably sold it anyway.

Layaway is your friend.......  I doubt a dealer would let you layaway a transferrable M16 or something like that, but that is how I get a lot of my firearms except for three times. 1)Tax Return 2)When I work a lot of o.t. 3) The unlikely event that I actually get some extra money from an unexpected source, and I decide not to put it in savings.
